http://www.eweddingstylemagazine.com/weddingstyle/SpringSummer_2009/?u1=texterity I'm not sure if this will link to the exact photo, but it's the green dendro design made by Christopher LaCass Design on PAGE 125. Of course, the one we are making will be WAY scaled down. It will be retailed at $300 in a 36" clarinet vase (rental).

So how would you approach the mechanics? My first thought is a 6" oasis orb taped well. Any transportation hints? We usually transport large arrangements in a special box that we built out of a full size flower box with wood slats that support the arrangements, but allow for flowers to hang down. I'm just worrying about this one rolling around.

EDIT: To find it, go to search and search for "125" and the design will pop up.

I would definitely use oasis, I wouldn't think it would have to be an orb... some of that $ could go into more orchids.

I'd transport the tops separately, not in a box or anything, just flat on the floor of the van.

Depending on how many you have, and if you have the time, you could insert some of the lower hanging orchids on site.

That is a LOT of orchids in that pic! I wonder how huge of a piece of oasis they had to use!

I'm sure some of our event florists who do big events will chime in. I'm curious to see what they say.

Oh btw, thanks for posting that magazine! How'd you do that?

BEAUTIFUL pics. I love how they have the handsome men holding the bouquets. :>

well, first off, What a yummy boy on page 155, purrrrr.............

Anyway, The hala is on the outside of the vase. I'd just use a lomey dish in top of the vase, obviously some type if pilsner under the hala. Sure is a big arrangement.

Ok - since the arrangement you have to do is scaled down - and the vase is 36 inches tall...... by clarinet vase - is that a trumpet shape or a slender tower shape.

if it is a trumpet shape - then I would do a lomey tray slightly larger than the rim of the vase......use a large oasis sphere....level the bottom so it can be glued to the tray....and do your design that way.

If the vase is more a slender tower type......then I would use the largest gala bouquet holder........and drop the handle into the vase on site.

This vase from our blog. Though this is a 24". RWK, your thinking is right on target to how I would approach this.

Can somebody post a pic of gala bouquet holder ?
Thank you.

Mocha - I enlarged the image and lo and behold you can see a white styro ball used to hold the flowers. Looks to be about 10" - 12" in diameter but could be larger.

Ah, the luxuries of photo shoots where no one has to actually make the flowers last through an event.

So my next question is how many dendros for a $300 arrangement? There are 7-8 of these for the event (plus 7-8 others equally intense). I've done something similar on a much smaller scale and I've "greened" the oasis with short orchids cut on the laterals to make sure the foam doesn't show. I'm estimating I'd need 15-20 stems just to cover the ball. I just don't want to over estimate the stems and underestimate the labor/ transportation on this one.

I agree with Rick but would just use a couple bricks of oasis stood on end and placed back to back. Pan glue them to the Lomey dish, cover with chicken wire and tape firmly. A couple Dixon pins for extra security.

I don't really believe the spherical foam helps make a design more round unless the flower heads are literally inches from the surfaced.

We use oasis on 9" lomey....cover lomey with one smilax garland ($9 here), wrapped around edge of lomey & covering the oasis. Then begin the dendro stems...for $300 arrangement...35 to 40 stems. The smilax is delicate enough to compliment the orchids if you can't use the amount of orchid stems you would LIKE to use and charge for!

I agree with CHR & boots12313, try and make the top up and then place the bottom stems in once you have taken them to the Reception hall.

I am in Australia so pricing may be different for the Orchids, but I would spend about $100 on Orchids (75 stems), you might have a different formula for working out how much you spend on flowers, but as I work from home I can spend more on flowers as I do not have the over heads that other florists have.

Thanks,
Steff

I did something similar last year in your price range. I used 10 stems of green dendros, 10 stems of white dendros, two bunches of delphinium and 1/2 bunch of seeded euc. I charged around $230 for it. I have several requests for the same centerpiece this year.

For mechanics I used a 4" candle tray on top of the vase and half a brick of foam shaved down in to a hemisphere. I taped everything down to the vase. This allowed me to make stem insertions almost all the way around. I delivered the vase and the flower arrangement separately, but this year I plan on making these arrangements on site.

The only reason I suggested the sphere of oasis is for speed and machanics - Since the foam is already shphere shaped, You can use uniform stem insertions without having to check and see if your spherical shape is being maintained. Just makes the designing a little quicker and more efficient.
