academy.jpgAcademy_Chapel_2.jpg I just became a preferred florist at this venue. It's in a turn of the century building called The Academy. Very ornate, very traditional chapel setting. The other preferred florist is VERY old-school and traditional in her decor. They added me as a second vendor because they wanted to offer a modern alternative for their brides. (BTW, brides do not have to use one of us, we're just on the vendor's preferred list)

I would like to do up some arrangements and have a photo shoot at the site. I welcome your input! So... how would you decorate this venue in a more modern style, while still complimenting the gorgeous traditional architecture?

I've only done one wedding there, here is what I did. bridgette church 2.jpgbridgette church.jpg

I think anyone picking that as their venue is going to want the traditional wedding feel. I won't go to far into the "mod" look. no exotics.
what about some topiary tree flowers or kissing ball type looks?

garland on the rail maybe?
wow its LOVELY!

Wow! Absolutely beautiful! And, HUGE! Your arrangements are gorgeous, love the peacock feathers! I have to agree with Flowermomma, even though I am not a florist. I think that anyone having a wedding here is going to be conservative in taste and will want very traditional arrangements, even vintage arrangements. Look up some old time (early 1900-40's) designs. Wow. Can't wait to see what you do with this.

I love the designs that you did.

If you are looking to build more of a portfolio for the space, I would try several completely different looks. A traditional, a bright and colorful funky arrangement, and maybe a sleek arrangement of just large white callas in a spray design with no greenery.

Thanks for the input guys! I agree that the bride who books this space is more traditional. I want to showcase something traditional but modern, if that makes sense? Almost all of their marketing material features thier rental pieces (the plain white arrangements shown in the venue photos), so I want something that freshens up the space a bit. Modern but not too funky... My initial thought was to do something in pinks and greens, featuring lots of hydrangeas. Perhaps something like one of these for either side of the altar (where they have the alcoves)? Mike&Alicia-445.jpgpurple white ceremony.jpg

Love your arrangements, especially the last one with the mauve hydrangea.

I agree with everyone - it can't be too far out there for that venue. My 2 cents for what it's worth -- I could see a hedge of roses, or other high-impact single flower type, along the altar rail. In the niches, I could see tall slender vases with a mass of lilies, curly willow for even more height, and willow-leaf euc cascading down. Or a tower vase with a mass of mokara orchids! Hmm ... I guess my gut reaction is keep it big and keep it simple.

I like the idea of the monobotanical look. You can use more contemporary glassware but do a very impactful design with a mass of hydrangeas, callas, orchids, or even roses! Beautiful place!

I see white trumpet vase with towering curly willow and massed anything. I had been thinking dendros. The mokaras would be beautiful, I have only had very short ones but maybe there are longer ones.

What really would appeal to me is massed hydrangea in blue and purple with curly willow and then open large callas or bells of ireland.

I would love to see an inverted design coming down from the balustrade area above the niches and then something very low inside of the niche for an unexpected but dramatic look. Just dreaming.

When I first saw the pictures - I thought of large vases/urn what have you with willow and large calla lilies. Also can picture orchids every where. Great for a dendro candelbra aisle.
