Hi everyone, I would really appreciate your input here. I have a bride who wants white roses and blue hydrangea for her bouquet. She also wants it to be hand-tied. I think the hydrangea would wilt within an hour. She really doesn't want a plastic holder, but I can't see any other way. Any ideas???

How do you hydrate the hydrangea? Funny, I have a rose and hydrangea wedding here this week. :)

Us too. :) Pink/green hydrangeas, Anna roses and sterling range.

We use the medium or large (not Grande) Oasis Wedding Bell holder, wrap the handle with matching Floratape and then bunch the fresh rose stems around it to replicate the 'hand-tied' look. A couple rubber bands will hold them in place until the final ribbon wrap is added.

The back of the bouquet holder and tops of the stems are concealed with galax, large ivy leaves, salal or some other broad foliage adhered with Oasis Adhesive.

We suggest you create the faux stem effect before constructing the bouquet.

We're going to try this...

When the hydrangea comes in, dip the entire head in water. Wait 'til it dries, then spray it with "Clear Life" from Design Master. (We used to use this years ago, but switched to Crowning Glory and other anti-transpirants). I just learned this trick at a TF design show and have been wanting to try it out...perhaps today as I have a bride coming in tomorrow who wants to use it for boutonnieres in August! I'll try to remember to post my results here.

We use lots of hydrangea, and even have a hydrangea garden, but haven't had much luck with putting it in oasis at all. Before hearing about the about trick, we would design the bouquets, spray with Crowning Glory or Aqua Finish and place them in vases in the cooler. We would also instruct the bride to have vases on her bridal table filled with water ready to accept the bouquets at the reception.

The word hydrangea comes from "hydro" which means it likes lots of water. This is true with many of the varieties in my garden--particularly the big leaf ones that I believe you're referring to--the large completely round balls in blue, pink, etc., right?

Other varieties are much more forgiving like Annabelle, Pee Gee and Pink Diamond. They don't take as much water and also withstand the heat better.

Hot pan glue works really well for adhereing stems to the handle.

We do a lot of these (just had one last week)--we make them truly hand-tied, and deliver them in water (20 oz Solo cups, 'cause we kept not getting the cases back), with advise to keep them in the water as long as possible. The Crowning Glory trick works, as does dipping them in a 50% mix of that clear floor wax in water.

There's not a lot you'll be able to do if the day is truly hot, though, and the brides are informed of that at the consultation and in writing with their wedding contract.

My daughter's second wedding was hydrangea & roses. Had absolutely no problems. Kept hand tied spirals in water from the day before til 1 hour before wedding. After the ceremony, had vases on tables but I do have to say all the centerpieces were the same but in oasis and I had them for 4 days afterwards at my house. All the flowers were from flowerbuyer.
