why I am a designer and why I love what I do. And more importantly that I doubt those big boxes or chains would go to this trouble...
So, one of our good corporate clients waited again til the last minute to schedule their christmas party with us, and as such, I have had a heck of a time finding all of the items needed for the look they wanted this year. One of the office managers had brought me a picture out of a magazine that she loved the look. Of course, they give me a lot of design leeway (sp?) but never the less it started with these striped cache pot containers. Well, source in magazine said they were from walmart, checked all 6 walmarts in our area to no avail. but found square tin containers that we then painted on the black stripes. We also added wooden painted balls as the "feet". Now, understand, we taped, painted, untaped and UGH!!! not so attractive smudging going on (even though I had told the girls to test one first.... you know how that goes). SOOO, the lovely Laurie had to go back and hand touch up the silver striping. eeeghh! already, I'm thinking of my dwindling profit margin on this job. No big whoop, so here we go.
Next item on the agenda, the look also had zebra striped ribbon tied around mini packages as place settings/cards etc. Well, that definitely didn't work in their budget, so I bought beautiful red christmas glass balls, added on branded ribbon to each one, but still trying to figure out how to get the zebra striped look into the concept (also a walmart source, but NO!!!)
SO, at 4am sharp this morning I woke from a dead sleep with this idea.
I used MS Publisher, printed a long strip of card stock (about 1 1/2" x 8 1/2")
with a zebra stripe border around the words "Happy Holidays! MHB 2005"
(MHB being the logo of the firm), got 7 per page, and then curled the ends with a pen. Will stand on it's own, on the plate next to the balls.
Just wanted to share this with you guys!
It's why we as designers, will always be one step ahead of the big guys!!!
Have a great weekend, and a Joyous Season!
THanks for listening.
