At the risk of being a typical parent, and more importantly a typical small business owner whose children are often present, I could NOT resist the opportunity to show my FC buds the latest Villyard floral/computer prodigy..
This is my molly who will be 4 at the end of february,
and in case you might think she's writing code, she's actually "dressing" barbies!

She's just a doll herself! Love her name.

My granddaughter Mackenzie is with me most of the time when not at school. Having dsl sure makes a difference but when she was 4 I had an older computer running some games for her age. She would flit between the games (reading and math) to "waiting" on customers, to making "arrangemittens". Now with two networked computers both dsl, she can dress Barbie (gotta love disney.com & nickelodeon.com) while I check the web on the laptop. At 7 now, she is a regular and still waits on customers, too! Enjoy, it's fun.

Parrie! Did that PS stuff work for you? If not call me. AND you and I have a FB date soon!

Kids and computers are great at work until you have 2 that want to use it. I have heard some good screaming and crying matches over the PC. Also had more than one get pretty trashed by them. Other than that my bosses kids are alright. ;-).

I concur though, cute kid.

Kids at the shop

Hello there, I'm new to all of this and am hoping to find a few friends and advise for you all. My 3 year old is all the shop evey afternoon after preschool in the morning. He is very good and loves greating the customers as they come in. I feel like this is the best of both worlds, I can do what I love (design) and be "Mommie" too. My older son walks to the shop after school everyday, and is a big help. I love the way the kids become a part of the business, and yet still get to have their mom.

Like I said this is new to me, and I have major budgeting questions for some of you long time experts. I'm living on nothing and have very little working captial. I am praying of the Valentine's rush to carry the shop for a few months. Any advise?

If you are new to Valentine's Day or fairly new you have to make sure you have all your jobs covered, but not overly covered. For example - the first time Val Day was on a Wednesday in our early years we were not prepared. It varies depending on your size, but for us we needed one person dedicated to the 2 phone lines and another dedicated to the counter. Another dedicated to the floor, overseeing design, cooler, flowers, new orders. Another dedicated to routing deliverers, overseeing everything and keeping everybody organized (that's always been me). That year we were completely understaffed and not prepared for a Wednesday Valentine's Day. We needed two people dedicated to the two phone lines, not just one. By the time I retrieved number 27 voicemail there were 4 more, Never ended and I am sure we lost a lot of orders. That was the first and last time I was ever understaffed for the phone or let voicemail pick up for Val Day. We needed two people dedicated to the counter, not just one. Even to this day no matter what day Val Day is on we have two people dedicated to the counter so people don't have to wait as long. A third helps periodically when the lobby gets backed up to six or more people.

Good organization and planning are key! I have one lady who just goes around and does all kinds of stuff, keeps boxes of roses made ahead as they sell, and single roses also. Processes credit cards for workers, keeps the front cooler looking presentable and restocked continuously, sweeps, empties the trash, walks across the street and gets us all cappuccino a couple times during the day [you know - the real important stuff :):)], etc. She is abused, but she doesn't mind, she likes doing all kinds of different things.

I have a young girl, the daughter of a good friend of ours who takes the day off of school and is my right arm all day. I have MS and am limited to running around so I make the office my domain and she runs for me. It all works great and we all have fun. In fact my sister who worked here with the original owner comes back every Val Day. She flies up from Florida (we're near Detroit) to work for us and makes a vacation of it.

Your sales people (phone and counter) are key to your gross sales, but whoever is in control of your cost of goods and hired help and overhead is key to gross profit. You can have a ton of sales, but it can all go away too quickly if not managed properly.

As for kids - we had a friend of mine since birth work for us for nine years and she brought her youngest son to work since he was two months old until he went to pre-school. That's when she started working for us actually. She wanted to be home in time for her middle son getting home from school and we always supported her in this. Even though I didn't want or have kids I fully believe in family and was 100% behind her not wanting to give her middle son those couple free hours after school unsupervised, those two hours are crucial for Jr. High age.

My sister who worked here first and was hired by the lady who actually started this shop had her kids come there after school (short walking distance with no main streets to cross). Four kids within a 2 1/2 year range including twins. Three were boys, but the girl took to flowers right away. She was making corsages like a pro at age 8. She is 36 years old now and worked for me for three years while studying to be a teacher. She moved to Florida a couple years ago to teach. Her twin brother used to come in the summer during summer vacation when he was in college and who knew? He was a great designer. Didn't need much help - a natural!

Another niece who was 8 yrs. old when my mom bought this shop is 34 now and has two boys and brings the youngest to work with her on the holidays.

Family and florists go hand in hand!!!

Good luck on Valentine's Day! The people here will have a ton of good advice for you for Val Day.

Doll Baby

Molly is a real doll baby! It seems like only yesterday when my daughter, Jessica Leigh, was at the flower shop-she just turned 25! I've always said that she is my second child & the flower shop was my first-it was opened 4 years before her birth. I never had her at the shop during store hours, I did not believe it was professional to have a baby/young child at the business. She did accompany me on Sunday deliveries and after she started elementary school she did come into the shop on occasion. In high school and college she helped during holdiays. She has absolutely no interest in inheirting the flower shop and is pursuing her acting career.

Parie-enjoy the precious years of youth with Molly-you'll turn around and she'll be on her way!

Our daughter was with me every day in the shop until she turned two but I had the luxury of having plenty of space, a park a block away and a babysitter for her here. Rosie even went on the road several times during my design circuit days. (I hired sitters in the destination cities.)

We waited so long and prayed so hard for our wonderful gift from God that I couldn't fathom the thought of missing her 'firsts'.

At the ripe old age of eight she now tapes and wires, fills containers, transplants potted gardens and loves to help on the weekends and during school holidays. (Her recent demand to be paid by the piece is still under negotiation. ;) )

Keep the kids away from dry floral foam!

Friends, please remember that dry floral foam is a known carcinogen. The dust that can kick up when using dry floral foam can irritate the young bronchial tubes in the lungs of children. My kids also visit the flower shop but they are not allowed to touch floral foam.

Just a friendly reminder from a fellow florist and a Daddy!

Kids at the Shop

My Katherine is here every day. She is 18 months old. Like CHR, we waited a long time for her and it is such a joy to have her around. Not always the most professional atmosphere, but it is what it is. Thanks for the daddy warning about the foam. We try to keep her safe and I appreciate the info.

To SLCumming- my best advise for Val Day and kids in the shop is Get A Sitter!!! As much as I love my child being here, she deserves better than her stressed out mommy who is dealing with employees, customers, vendors, and more. Last year we begged, borrowed, stole, traded flowers, etc to get sitters for the 5 days leading up to Valentines Day and including the day. We were able to get people who could keep her all hours if/when I worked late.

Then, two days after the rush, my family all sat down to a lovely dinner (baby included) but I would have gone nuts trying to care for her during the rush.

Best wishes for success

Donna
