Here I am, a 5'1" and a bit person looking after two greyhounds and a dobe this weekend. All three big dogs are literally trying to crawl on to my lap because of da mn fireworks. I swear the house is rattling from the shaking of the hounds...

Bandit, the store.....

Mascot and Official Greeter (Shi tzu) would rather hide under the bed.

What's the occasion for the Fire Works?

Hi Glenn:

May two four is the first long weekend of the summer... known as Victoria Day in honour of her birthday. It rarely falls on the 24th of May. ;) Anyway it's an excuse to terrorize animals large and small with fireworks.

The greyhounds were rescued dogs from the tracks in NH. Their history is unpleasant to say the least and as a result have panic issues. I literally have to drag them outside tonight so they can take care of business.

The Dobe, thinks he's a lap dog at the best of times... but this is the first time he's tried out of fear. Honestly his head is bigger than mine.

Off I go to get them out so I can finally go to bed.

Miss Finnegan agrees wholeheartedly!!!
She decided that if those "bad-bad" noises wouldn't stop she would bark at them!! (keep in mind , she is dasch-mixed with something taller) She goes all stiff-legged and literally bounces up as she gives em a piece of her mind!!
Tonight should be the end of it for another year..then tis only the bad-bad thunder that she will have to "chase" away!! (keeps her busy all summer !)
Hope your puppy-sitting was fun the rest of the weekend!

Ahh Jeannie... love the mental picture you have given me of your Finnegan. :) However, this will not be the last of it... don't forget Canada Day, and Labour Day and whatever day the nimrods choose to shoot off a few... morons.

Lady doesn't like fireworks or thunderstorms. She spends a good portion of July 4th night hiding behind the pillows on the couch and trembling. She's a good girl and, aside from occasionally hiding a biscuit in a potted plant, is wonderful at the shop.

Pepper, Joey and Baxter were at it last night.

The three Aussies were in full on bark mode last night with the fireworks going off as well.

One more night to go.

How many big dogs can pile on "Auntie" Toria? Well, due to lack of space, on aforementioned person, 2 1/2. I'm glad I'm going home tonight before the big show goes off!

Oscar doesn't mind any loud noises, he sleeps through them all (except for little kids entering the shop, then he's out of his bed and to his "hole" in the counter to meet and greet). But if I can post this picture, you can tell why we bought the couch, it's big enough for him to stretch out on.

Aussies rock!

Joey and Baxter would sit by the picture window and when they would see the rockets go above the roof tops they would bark, they were responding to the visual as well as the sound.

They weren't afraid just ready to protect their "sheep".

Yes they do Doug... but then I think most dogs and cats rock. :) My charges this weekend were afraid and it was up to me to protect the "flock". I was glad to give it over to their "parents" last night.

When I arrived home, Elmo the cat was nowhere to be found in my tiny space. He was well hidden under the bed... he too is terrified of the loud noises. When he did emerge it was to crawl under the covers next to me.

We used to sit on our enclosed porch and watch the thunder storms roll around our town in the valley and the lightening would dance off the buildings, trucks and log piles in the mill yard just down the street. It was a good educational trick we used on the girls when they were young. Thunder, lightening, etc...God bowling didn't work anymore at their ages. So one day we're all on the porch, hubby, me, two girls, two cats and one afghan hound named Blue. It was a great storm, lots of lightening and big boomers....Girls were digging it UNTIL......big streak of lightening hit the oil tank filler pipe on the house next door to us. Considering all the windows were open in the porch and the house is less than 20 feet from the end of the porch, needless to say it was quite the bang. Kids screamed, smelled the sulphur, saw the sparks, cat left marks on my legs that now are scarred and that big dog just disappeared. Found the dog in her kennel, wouldn't come out for hours, cats - only God knew where they each went cause they didn't come out even to eat for a day......kids, refused to sit on porch during thunder storms for years afterwards (until the oldest had kids of her own and now tries to "watch the storms" from her own front porch). Oh yeah, hubby checked out the house next door to make sure that the oil tank didn't explode....
I so understand the paranoia of loud noises and animals.

rescue remedy

I had a little cairn terrier who was petrified of loud noises. He would hide under the bed. Unfortunately he's gone now. :purpletea
However someone told me about this herbal remedy that helps sooth nervousness, and they use it for pets also. I tried it on my first overseas flight last year and it helped me. I wasn't nervous at all.

There is a link at this site for info on animals. I purchased mine at the local GNC store. It cost about $10.

Oh yes...one more thing.. Rescue Remedy is made from Flowers!!!

Yes the floral remedies are quite good with the hounds. They don't mind taking it, but I must admit I didn't see an appreciable difference.
