I was honored to sit and listen to him. Neal and I went to a restaurant called Denny's after church yesterday and we always sit at the counter - very large and roomy. The waitress came up to us and said I remember you guys - you have the florist. The older gentleman sitting next to me started telling me he worked as a florist for almost 50 years. I heard all about his business and his father who ran it before him starting around 1910. They had 3 greenhouses also. He had others doing most of his accounting and lost a lot of money for him making bad investments. He resides now in a home on the property where the greenhouses were that was turned into a golf course. The business only lasted two years after he sold it. He retired with very little money. He lives on $1020.00 a month SS alone. I heard all about his family. We talked about the holidays and he asked me if we were FTD members. I talked with him quite a bit about how the whole industry is changing and he really seemed to enjoy the conversation. After he left my husband said he thinks I really made that man's day, but the truth is he made mine.
Today I was telling my mom about him (He is 86 and my mom is 82). When I told her his name and what he did and where he lived she started giggling and covered her face in embarrassment or shock or something. When they were teenagers she had a date with his brother buy cancelled it. Small world!
