I had a BatMitzvah Saturday, of which eight of the tables had Ice Sculptures set in wide wreaths of flowers. My recommendation is DO NOT EVER SELL THIS IDEA no matter what any ice sculpting company tells you.

Party started at 7:30 eve, by 9:10 I got a call, the reservoirs that the sculptures sat upon were over flowing. I arrived at 9:30 to remedy the problem and when I walked in the ballroom the main courses were being served. The linens surrounding the 4 adult table Ice Sculptures were completely soaked and had to be replaced. I was told to remove the Ice Sculptures each one weighed in at a modest 150 pounds and as slippery as a wet fish off the middle of a 6 foot round table.

I was so humiliated, so embarrassed, and felt so responsible for ruining the party. I was assured by the Ice Company I hired that they would last 5 hours. When I called this morning, he told me that the fine print on contract states, "not responsible" for melting. Thanks.

The 4 smaller ones on the kid's table started to leak at 11:30. I suppose it was my fault, the kids that delivered and set up came in at 4 instead of the given time of 6 to 7, but assured me that they would be fine. Sometimes you lose especially if you don't research properly. I hope to save face with the family because there are 7 brothers and sisters with between the lot of them have numerous children just coming into age. This is the third Mitzvah I've done for this clan.

We have a local ice sculpture guy and he always has the reservoir and a bucket beside it with a drain tube. When we did the bridal show and had the booth next to him, we had a huge HOT light on our crystal arch, which caused major melting for him, sorry Dale. One of the sculptures was leaning very badly by the end of the day, it ended up crashing to the floor just after the show closed, thank goodness, sent a HUGE shower of ice after it shattered about 12 feet out. That would be very dangerous if on a table for guests.

Sorry to hear they wanted the immediate sale more than your return business.

I have NEVER had this problenm - that Ice guy must suck! I even had an entire bar made out of ice - had slopes for the drinks to slide down - FUN! We froze red roses all across the top.

Sorry this happened to you - I would find a new ice guy!

Thom, not that it helps, but ... BEEN THERE... had that happen...

We only use ice (and we do regularly) in places we can set up a drain system of some sort...

I thought of that, but to late, would have drilled hole through linen and table and fastened a tube to drain in 5 gallon bucket. The pan was a 3 inch deep 16 inch octagon with a led light inside, one would think that's not much for a 3 1/2 foot ice tower, eh? Shoulda coulda woulda. I'm still reeling over my super human strength lifting those monsters off the table. More like grabbing them with both arms and holding on for dear life. It's amazing how embarrassment can get the adrenaline pumping.

Ran across wobbly tables two weeks ago, yikes! A table collapsed during dinner and tea light wax splashed on the tall vase. Someone luckily caught the vase before it fell over. scary. So glad we did not have hanging candles! I have been thinking about this, and have decided not to place anything tall at that venue until they replace the tables.

Thom - that just stinks. I hope there is some positive resolution for you.

On a related note - does anyone cover anything like this in their wedding / event contracts? About not being liable for your product damaging or injuring someone? I had another vendor ask me about this today, and I thought of this thread and the possible liability issues from collapsing sculptures, tippy vases etc etc.

Never thought of this type of clause before, and hadn't seen one in any of the contracts shared amongst ourselves.

Tracy, You ask a very good question. Using Thom's ice situation, Thankfully it was just the table lines, but what if it had been someone's dress, or suit - we know from past experience how water leaves a mark on old style acetate ribbon.......or a tall glass cylinder topples over because the table is a bit wobbly, and the glass shards from hitting the floor cut someone's leg.......How do we cover things like that?

How do we protect ourselves from that.....That's a good question Tracy.

I never understood the whole ice sculpture thing anyway. I don't see the draw to it. Seems like alot of nothing to me. Especially on the guest tables. That's just an accident waiting to happen.

Tracy, I carry one million Liability insurance. I demand to see proof from every vendor I hire too of the same. There was also the child or the family who had a severe allergic reaction to something eaten which we were questioned because those long silver troughs I made were filled with assorted candies. We were questioned if we included any peanut products, which we didn't. We found out that one of the Children's Orderveors, fried egg rolls were fried in peanut oil by mistake, venues problem. Also a guest slipped on snow and gashed his forehead open, again, not our problem.

The only time ever we have been responsible was when I had a prop tip during installation and fell on a nosey guest who happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Had to rush to the hospital due to neck and shoulder injury. Thank God for Insurance.

Thom - we carry the same, but I was wondering about a specific clause, if it would be smart to include, or add too much legal mumbo jumbo.

I'll see if I can ask an attorney friend.

Note to self..... never incorporate ice sculptures in special events.

This is why I love the $1000 drop and go weddings.

I was sweating bullets just reading you post Thom. I can't handle that big event set up stress.

Amen to that, sister!

Yes, I would like to add a clause to my contract too. I would think wobbly tables would be the venue's problem....but I would like to know for sure.

Flying hot wax is scary!

OMG Thom OMG Thom OMG Thom...what a freakin' nightmare. I am SO sorry that happened to you..I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy. All I can say is that it sounds as if you handled it as a major professional would have. It was a cool (no pun intended) idea to have ice sculptures as centerpieces..unfortunately a lessoned learned the hard way.
