Help! My friend asked me to make an arr for her mom's 75th birthday party and she wants it to include 75 flowers. I am just charging her cost, so she will probably choose carnations, to stay at a reasonable price. Any ideas on a design, so it doesn't look boring or funeral like? Her mom is 75 remember!! More traditional. Can be creative, but not too off the wall/funky.

Heather:
I would choose all neat colors of the carnations (deep purples.....to light lilac lavender.) I would include somewhat of a focal, such as small apples, to mix in with the flowers.

I would keep it lush and mounded, to avoid the "funeral look"

Purple statice as an accent here and there. A few butterflies flitting on in ...

have fun!

Nice - thanks. I might have to change to hot pink, b/c I got a deal on those, but would look cool with green accents too... cool foliages, etc.

Any other ideas?

Heather,
You could also incorporate, as a "collar" around the arrangment, a loose coil in a natural fashion, of honeysicle vine......tucking into the foam periodically.

Another idea would be to do a topiary look of all carns, in a cool looking ceramic pot of some kind.

Cheryl

(can't spell or type at all today....must be a 4/1 thing).

I also love pedestal bowls. You can put a pedestal candle in the middle and fill the bowl with the hot pink carns all the way around.

Oh and by the way....I snag these in the dishes department at Walmart all the time. They have bold colors and designs. You can buy just the pedestal bowl without the rest of the dishes set.

What about a victorian style posy using the colours mentioned. You could then edge it in gysophelia which i know everyone hates but if she is older she probably appreciates it, this would give it a really modern edge but with traditional flowers.

Per Benjamin (i seriously am going to talk about him forever sorry), used carnations a lot. He wired them and used them in heart shaped bouquets and allsorts but obviously the vase life would not be there then.

Or, what about a really low square dish, nice ceramic one with foam inside, you could cut all the heads off and mass in a range of three colours. You could then edge in linoleum or gyp again around the edge of the dish and have butterflies sitting occasionally, this could be a lovely long coffee table arrangement.

Hope this all makes sense.

You could do a grouped hand tied in a vase with folded aspidistra leaves and soft trailing foliage arround the edge. You could then incorporate the butterflies in a soft halo. Keep the colours tones of one colour or really mix it up and make it really zingy totally clashing looks wonderful in this design. More mature ladies do like bright as well as fluffy and pretty. We do alot of this type of thing and the older ladies love it. I've added a couple of very similar designs.(Not my pictures) But give the general idea.

Another idea - we used this design for a function one time. The design we did was in shades of red for a christmas theme party.....12 tables....approximately 200 dollars per table.......this was for a large corporate party in Tennessee.

I adapted the colors to your pink coloration Heather.

Take a large footed ceramic urn in a nice shade of pink.....add into the center a pink glass gazing ball of a deeper shade.....then arrange your carnations or other flowers in a horizontal flowing line...all in varying tints, tones, and shades of pink.......You should be able to see approximately half of your gazing ball above your flowers.

Makes a stunning centerpeice.

Heather,

How are the flowers being displayed for the party? Is she looking for a big buffet piece? Or something else? I think if your friend wants to use 75 flowers for the significance, it should be a design that lets people see that. One big arrangement that clumps a lot of them together may not make that very obvious. No one would really notice.

Maybe she would be happier with 5 smaller arrangements of 15 carns each? It depends on the set up of the party.
