I know some of you are from the DC area, so I thought I would get some opinions... I will have one day to spend in Washington DC and am trying to figure out how to spend it. I will be by myself, so please don't send me anywhere scary! Will be dropped off in the suburbs and taking the Metro into the city. I have done all of the traditional government things in past visits. I have been to the National Gallery of Art and am considering it again. Or the Smithsonian Art museum. Not sure which is better.

Any ideas on anything anyone?

Thanks.

Smithsonian and the White House. Then take the metro to Arlington Cemetary. these 3 will give you a real feel for what Washington is all about...Enjoy the visit. Too bad you don't have time to get out into the suburbs. Would love to buy you a drink!

Aw thanks! Which of the Smithsonian do you recommend? I was researching it online today. I know I saw the Natural History Museum as a kid and the Air and Space... All I remember is being bored out of my mind. Of course, I was a kid, and so I am hoping that as an adult I have a greater appreciation for this sort of thing! :)

Rats, not there that weekend. Fun things to do in DC, the Newseum is brand new. The Spy Museum is great. If you are there during the evening, the Roosevelt Monument is amazing at night as well as the new WW11. The Native American Museum is beautiful. And the Holocaust is very moving.

The Spy Museum? That sounds fun. And I will think about the Native American one. I saw the Holocaust museum last time. Yes, I cried my eyes out. Thanks!

It is too bad you all won't be in town. Would love to meet those darling daughters of yours!

I'll check my schedule, I'm only told when and where to go, I think we are in NYC that weekend, but I only found out yesterday that I'm back in DC Saturday. If I'm not booked early Oct, I'll see if I can book something to put me down there in DC.

Why are you there, and for what?

Aww thanks, but please don't make a special trip!! :) I don't even know for sure what I will be able to do. I am going on a vacation with a couple friends who lives in VA. I am flying to VA to meet them and we are leaving from there. Problem is the way the flights were, I had to fly in one day earlier than we are leaving. So I am looking to occupy myself for a day while my friends are at work that Thursday. I was planning on just sitting at my friend's parents' house and reading a book all day. But then I got to thinking, I am so close to DC, I might as well DO something. But I have no idea what is going to happen with transportation, their work schedules, etc. I am seriously hoping they can sneak out early and we can leave on our trip earlier. So don't plan anything around me. I am as unreliable as they come as far as this trip is involved. I too am just doing what I am told! :) Thanks though!!

During our stay in DC for symposium a few years ago........I had a blast just walking around embassy row and seeing the incredible architecture and gardens of all these embassies. I took so many pictures.

Shopping around the DuPont circle area was fun too. All kinds of cool, cute, quirky little stores.

SO many different nationalities to eat at........I don't know the name of it, but in Georgetown was the most quaint, fabulous, most incredibly flavored Vietnamese restaurant. The food was simply incredible. Vietnamese spring rolls that melted in your mouth, they were so good.
