My Grandpa served as a cook in the Navy during WW2.

My Dad Served 2 tours in Viet Nam,,,,,And is the worse for it.

I have several cousins in various branches of the military that have served in the the Middle East wars. 2 of which gave their lives.

My Grandpa is so proud of his service in the Navy. I didn't realize until a few years ago that a lot of the minorities (Hispanic and Black) were given kitchen jobs. My Grandpa always told me of his days in the Navy with such pride, never a hint of "They did me wrong and put me in the kitchen!"
His thinking was He was feeding and nourishing the men and what an honor it was to do it!
My Grandpa is an incredible person.

My Dad told me when I was a kid not to ask or mention Viet Nam. He didn't want to talk about it. I found out why. He trained to be communications, with a radio shack, sorry I don't know the technical term.
But he ended up driving a ammo truck for a while, then he was put on search and recovery. Needless to say, he saw some very horrific stuff.
My dad is a mess, and I don't think he'll ever get over Viet Nam. If it weren't for my Mom, I honestly don't know what would have happened to him.

Anyway, every year I let them know that I do appreciate them and their Military service.

I found out last year from my sister that Grandpa told her I was the only person ever to thank him for his military service. My thank yous mean so much to him.

So I just want to put this out there that is you know a vet, let them know their service wasn't in vain. Words of appreciating mean so much more to Vets than you know.

So to all the Vets on this board, THANK YOU!

Thank your Grandpa and your Dad for all of us!

Unless you've been there, you'll never know of the sacrifices or the ghosts our vets have had to deal with or bring home with them for the rest of their lives.

I'm a member of the Marine Corps League of Westchester and the Vietnam Veterans Association Chapter 49. We still have some VN vets who have never been able to make it home in their minds.

Tell your Grandpa that, this Marine loved his Navy cooks when I was on ship. So much so that, I would volunteer to serve on the mess deck just so that, I had full access to all the food which was available.

The Navy messdeck CHIEF was my very best favorite friend! LOL

A Marine or Navy serviceman doesn't have much going for them other than their duty, but the COOKS on our ships made our lives easier!

So tell Grandpa from this Old Jarhead, thanks for what you did for our troops and always know that, your great food fed our bellies and our spirits all of the time.

To your Dad, tell him we all say Thank you for his service to our country and to your Mom, thank her for helping him to survive!

Semper Fi!
