My Grandpa served as a cook in the Navy during WW2.
My Dad Served 2 tours in Viet Nam,,,,,And is the worse for it.
I have several cousins in various branches of the military that have served in the the Middle East wars. 2 of which gave their lives.
My Grandpa is so proud of his service in the Navy. I didn't realize until a few years ago that a lot of the minorities (Hispanic and Black) were given kitchen jobs. My Grandpa always told me of his days in the Navy with such pride, never a hint of "They did me wrong and put me in the kitchen!"
His thinking was He was feeding and nourishing the men and what an honor it was to do it!
My Grandpa is an incredible person.
My Dad told me when I was a kid not to ask or mention Viet Nam. He didn't want to talk about it. I found out why. He trained to be communications, with a radio shack, sorry I don't know the technical term.
But he ended up driving a ammo truck for a while, then he was put on search and recovery. Needless to say, he saw some very horrific stuff.
My dad is a mess, and I don't think he'll ever get over Viet Nam. If it weren't for my Mom, I honestly don't know what would have happened to him.
Anyway, every year I let them know that I do appreciate them and their Military service.
I found out last year from my sister that Grandpa told her I was the only person ever to thank him for his military service. My thank yous mean so much to him.
So I just want to put this out there that is you know a vet, let them know their service wasn't in vain. Words of appreciating mean so much more to Vets than you know.
So to all the Vets on this board, THANK YOU!
