For the last couple of weeks our site has gone from a pretty constant number 2 in the 7-pack to number 8. I'm not sure just why this happened, but what really has me puzzeled right now is that the florist in the number one position right now doesn't have a web site.

I'm wondering why we work so hard to figure out how to optimise our sites to rise in the 7-pack, when someone who hasn't even bothered to create a web site gets first place. I guess I'm really missing something. Any ideas?

The Local results are business listings, not website listings. The Organic search results list web pages.

You can optimize your site to help optimize your local business listing, but that alone doesn't do the job. You don't need a site to rank in Local results.

Make sure you have not only claimed your business listing, but that you've completed as much detail as possible, including selecting / creating the appropriate business categories - and don't forget to get reviews on Google Local, Yahoo!, Yelp, City Search, Merchant Circle and the rest.
