This morning we lost our Rhodie (Rhodesian Ridgeback). He ate something that was toxic to his system and died in the vet's office. His name was Rusty and he had been part of our family for 8 years. We adopted him from the Humane Society. He was an escape artist and found novel ways to get out of his pen and dog run. He was a small dog at 95 pounds and could put his paws on my shoulders and look in my eyes. He loved to run but we broke him of the habit of going out on the road and chasing cars. So true to this dog and his smarts, he'd chase the cars inside the fence in our yard and oftentimes beat them. He only knew one way to run and that was full tilt. We'll miss him and his antics. I won't miss the part about all the holes he dug in the yard in our 5 acres.

Our hearts go out to you.......Your fellow Doggie Mama's and Papa's fully understand the loss.....we miss our four legged family members.

I had a chihuahua that lived for nineteen years before she passed and when she did , I cried and cried.

I'm so sorry you lost Rusty. How fortunate you all were to have found eachother and had 8 years of love, fun and adventure.

Thank you for adopting him from the Humane Society.

thoughts from NJ - a good friend just lost her doggy too - it's so sad to hear these things. They are such a big part of families .... hugs to you!

Ouch.
I'm sure you are really hurting now, and those of us who have loved animals as part of our family understand the depth of the loss you feel.
Rusty was lucky to have had you in his life, and you were blessed to have had him for the last 8 years. Imagine the pain he would have suffered if you had not adopted him when you did. It sounds like the rascal had a great life with you, no matter how short.
You did a great thing when you adopted him...both for him, and for you and your family.
Mourn his death, but mostly, cherish his short time with you.
And try to remember that God puts these friends on earth so that we can enjoy, and love, and celebrate these wonderful friends.
My sympathy...

You were his angel and he your child. Together you had everything (even his prized diggings). Bless you for giving him probably the best years. Remember him lovingly..with special memories.
Hugs....

This is pain i am convinced only another pet owner has experienced. I swear my heart was broken when my dog died a year a half ago. Really sorry to hear your bad news and hope you feel better soon.

It took a year for me but we now have two bassetts which keep us more than busy, you never know you may get another one soon and give them a whole new home like you did for Rusty.. :)

Thoughts and prayers from Michigan....

We are given the love from dog's for only a short time.... trust that he's running today, running in the wind with many friends around to play with...

I know it has been posted before - but it such a pretty poem.....and we do miss our four-legged family members when they leave us behind.........

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Rhodies are so beautiful, I'm so sorry to hear about Rusty. You are great to have rescued him and loved him for 8 years. In a strange way, you WILL miss those holes in the yard -- when I lose a pet, I look at some material thing they "ruined" and think, "what I would give to have 'Otto' chew my shoe up once more..."

Thinking of you and the loss you are feeling. I hope someday you open your heart to another pet in need and experience years of joy and unconditional love again.

I am so sorry for your loss. I know it's especially difficult since it was so sudden. Beloved pets have such a strong hold on our hearts because of the unconditional love they give us. Keep thinking of all the special times you had together and all his antics. Rusty will happily live forever in your heart.

Oh, I'm so sorry. Dogs have always been a part of my family, so I understand your loss. I'm dreading the day our boxer Dune leaves us... my poor husband will not handle that well.

Big hugs to you.

I have a Rhodie I got from a Rhodie rescue about 6 years ago. He was 10 months old at the time and very afraid of males. He still has problems with my husband occasionally. He finally got turned around when we took in our grandson's rescue dog.
Rhodie's will eat anything. I am so sorry to hear about your dog.
My thoughts go out to you and your family.

So sorry to hear of your loss - your heart must have a big empty spot right now!

Rhodies are indeed a beautiful breed.

As a dog lover, would you share with us what you think Rusty might have gotten into? You might save some other dog's lives.....
