Sad, sad news. The industry lost a gentle, smart, talented, amazing star today. Kirk Pamper lost his long battle with cancer.

I received the following email:

Dear friends of Kirk,

This evening we received this very sad mail from Jim, and it breaks ours hearts to bring you these sad news:

"Hello-

I am Jim Sisti, Kirks ex of 19 years, and I was hoping you were on the sansevieria yahoo group that he was on and could post a msg on his behalf. Kirk is very near the end of his life today, at the latest he may have another 24 hours or so left on this earth. If you could pass on the word to his other many friends that his death is close at hand, but that his family is with him and he is being managed to make it as pain free as possible. His vast collection of plants will be donated to the Memphis Botanic Garden , in Memphis TN USA, so if any sans fans get to Memphis, they ought to be sure to make a visit to the Botanic gardens and recall Kirk as they walk among the plants in the greenhouse.

Thank you, and remember the many great days Kirk has had in this world, they fun and joy he found in each day, and don't let this transistion be a thing of sorrow, but know that Kirk is just hunting rare plants in a new place in a healthy and strong body free of pain
Jim"

Kirk has been our very best friend for many years, and he has visited us here in Denmark many times - always bringing joy, love and happiness with him. We have been in close contact with him during the last difficult years, and have shared his ups and downs - during which he was always optimistic and looking forward to better times. Kirk is the most fantastic person we have ever met and it was so easy to love him.

He will be missed very much and right now it is difficult to imagine a world without Kirk. But we are grateful that we had the opportunity to know him and to call him our friend. He will be so missed. And knowing Kirk, we are sure that he can feel it if you all think of him, light a candle and prays for him.

Kirk - we love you - always have and always will.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Kirk was a florist's florist. He had passion for flowers and plants and devoted many volunteer hours contributing to botanical projects he loved.

I'll never forget the first time I saw him give a presentation. Totally blown away with his vocabulary, knowledge and complete comfort in his own skin. Smart but never aloof. He raise the level of any room he entered.

I spoke with him a couple months ago and he sounded strong and full of resolve.

He was doing better, but stuck in the hospital and bored and I suggested he take a look at the dreadful Wikipedia page about Florists and add his knowledge and care. He took one look, said OMG and told me he'd give it a go. Sadly, he never got the energy.

I hope someone picks up his (huge) mantle.

God Speed, Kirk.

Very sad news. Thank you for taking the time to share, Cathy and Valerie.

Thanks for the update. We'll miss him.

I helped Kirk with a Teleflora presentation on window displays in 2000. It was just before my final step to completing my AIFD certification. Not only did everyone in the audience learn tons from his expertise, but he was so encouraging and thoughtful to me in my upcoming work and tests. The entire industry will miss a great man.

He's not gone yet!

A few hours, I received a note from Henrik in regards to my post on Florist Blogs--Kirk hasn't passed away yet. He's still in the hospital, struggling. No doubt in need of good vibes.

I fully expect a Mark Twain quote coming through the same rumor mill.

Sending positive thoughts, for a peaceful passing to this man I never met, who you all speak so well of. Thoughts from NJ for comfort for you all, and the knowledge for him that he made a difference to each and every one of you.

Yow! shades of "The Walrus was Paul".

Good vibes to Kirk.

I received an e-mail a short time ago from Henrik. Sadly, Kirk passed away this morning around 10am Memphis time.

This is from Kirk's brother:

Cherished friends and family,

I am sending this message of love to as many of you as I can, and realize that are many more who would want to know. Please forward this note to anyone you feel I may have inadvertently omitted.

Our beautiful loved one Kirk left our presence early this morning to begin the journey to his next calling. His sister Kris and I, his brother, were there at his side and saw that his passing was peaceful and comfortable, as we all had hoped for.

As per his wishes, his remains will be donated to the cancer research institute at the University of Tennessee and as such, there will be no immediate memorial services. But know that a plan to celebrate his life among us is being formulated, to be held in the spring (his favorite time of year) of next year. You will be kept informed of dates and locations, and I look forward to seeing and meeting many of you there.

I come away from having spent the last week with Kirk learning that there are even more friends of his that I never had the chance to meet, how amazing. His ability to find and make devoted friendships was one of his many wonderful qualities. His spirit and memory will remain alive among us all.

I am including a photo of Kirk that I took of him during a recent trip to Alaska. His smile says it all.

Peace and love to us all,
Keith Pamper

'He goes free of the earth.
The sun of his last day sets
clear in the sweetness of his liberty.

The earth recovers from his dying,
the hallow of his life remaining
in all his death leaves.

Radiances knows him. Grown lighter
than breath, he is set free
in our remembering. Grown brighter

than vision, he goes dark
into the life of the hill
that holds his peace

He's hidden among all that is,
and cannot be lost.'

Kirk passed away this morning

Kirk Pamper passed away this morning in Memphis. Kirk was amazing in the way that he lived his life and dealt with his illness. His family said that he had wished for his body to be donated to a cancer research center at the University of Tennessee. Kirk also donated his sanseverias to the Memphis Botanical Gardens.

There will be no service at this time. They will have a service in the spring. Kirk's life touched so many people around the world. He will truly be missed.

In honor of Kirk

A special flower from the garden of life has faded and passed to the next realm. His extreme commitment to design education will be remembered by those who worked with him. Our AIFD Guide to Floral Design was one such labor of love and talent. God speed O young and faithful servant. Lynne
