I have a wedding coming up in June 08, the parents are very good friends of mine, and I want to make it really spectacular for them.
The daughter choose jewel tones, brought in paint swatches, dark teal green, dark purple, and dark pink, almost fushia. For a june wedding, :boggles:!
She also brought in a bridal magazine with all those colors and flowers in a bouq. They were flowers we have never even seen on our flower list, for cut flowers. And the colors were obviously not that dark in real life. I explained all of that to her, so now she wants to know what I can get in those colors. I told her nothing in the teal green that wouldn't be sprayed. She doesn't want sprayed.
I think she didn't really believe me because they showed it in her bridal magazine. Those bridal magazines really tick me off sometimes. They are not really represetative of what colors and flowers really are. (Next to it was a bride carrying a bouq of Easter Lily blooms, can you imagine!!)
Anyway, I'm on a rant this week, what would you suggest? I am really baffeled. She wants 40 centerpieces for the reception, really large, need really large flowers. Pus all the ususal bridal bouq, bouts, and coursages. I know hydranges would work, what else? Any ideas would be really appreciated. She also wants black accents, which we will do with wire, (wrap stems) and ribbon.
I am very nervous about this because of the color lawsuit going on right now. I know my friends would never sue me, but I do want to make this extra beautiful. HELP!!

Is a touch of silk completely out?

Never assume this, that is first...Business is business and friendship is friendship. One can definately ruin the other.

For the colors...you can use hot pink roses, gerberas come in many jewel tones, feathers are a must for the teal or ribbon.. there are so many actual jewels for bouquets right now that you can use. You just need to think accents when you are deling with colors that flowers don't actually come in.

One of my Mom's sayings was "Business and Friendship don't mix".

What is their budget on those centerpieces?

I like peacock feathers or maybe the ribbon can be teal. Look hard enough and you can find teal like rhinestone accents to lightly sprinkle through-out the bouquet.

I was once told by a wise man, when doing a job for family of friends you charge them the full amount or nothing at all.

For your dark purple and black accents use calla lilies and tulips.

And please do not take this to be offensive, but I have brides who come in all the time and ask for Tulips in December, because all the other florists said that tulips aren't grown then (because it is not on "the list"). I will pwn those florists all day long because I have used the internet to my shops advantage and found tulips and other flowers. And guess what, they're pretty much the same price all year round and I am not getting them out of Holland. I think to be a good florist is to evolve off "the list", which I am assuming is from your local wholesaler. In this day in age it is ok for jewel tones in June, it's call non-traditional, which is hot right now when it comes to weddings. I would suggest you find a broker who can get you awesome stuff for cheap shipped to your front door over night. You can PM me and I'll give you 2 great brokers. The abilty for florists to move from old to new is up to them, do they still have that passion? The net is a great tool and FC is a great place to network. :)

GL and I can't comment on your centerpieces unless I know a budget.

Vikki,

I am curious to know what flowers were in the bouquet she showed you. Knowing that we could possibly make better suggestions as to whether they are available and what may be a good substituion.

I'm swamped today, but I will get back with budget and flowers she saw as soon as I can. Dazeal, will PM you when I have time, would love to chat. Thanks for the suggestions, and I didn't take offense. I have just had some really bad experiences with flowers I have ordered off the net. But I would would be more than willing to try again.
I suggested peacock feathers, hated the idea. Ribbon accent is black, doesn't want teal. Teal crytals would be good, I could even make my own if I can't find them, we talked about that. She really still wants teal flowers, but not sprayed. I don't know of any, do any of you? A few silks mixed in is an option.
Loved the tulips, perfect color by picture. Do you know the variety name? Calla's an option but doesn't want black, will try for the fushia color. She doesn't want roses, too common.
Keep the ideas coming. It is helping alot, I'm formulating a look in my mind of what I can do just from the suggestions you have all given me already!!!
And no, they wouldn't sue me, he is the pastor of my church, been friends for 30 years, I just really want this to be special. When their other daughter got married 3 years ago I did the flowers, it was beyond gorgeous, I just want to do the same for them again. I'm putting the pressure on myself. At least they gave me plenty of time to come up with a plan.
I also rent tuxedo's, they already picked out the geometric polka dot ties, brand new in the book, come in teal, purple, and dark pink.. This will be a fun wedding to put together.

You may be able to get that teal color in a genestra. It is usually stem or dip dyed. This can be a nightmare for bleeding color, so be warned. Also, try out tinting a lt blue hydrangea with teal and maybe basil green and delphinium blue to get an antique look. I have done this in the past with wht hydrangea tinted with yellow, orange and ivory or lt blue tinted with burgundy, lavender and delphinium. It looks nice buy a few cheap and try it out.....

Vikki, did you consider "Just for Flowers" spray dye? I don't know if you can make a teal by laying colour but this isn't paint, it's a transparent dye. Here's their site http://www.dmcolor.com/newprod.htm
Rock on...............

I love the Just for Flowers spray, we use it almost exclusively now. Yes, I will experiment with it, I think once she sees it she would like it as it doesn't look painted. I wish they had a teal but we're pretty good at layering color and getting some good results.

The peacock color is perfect for this. If you need to make it look richer, layer with some purple pansy & delph blue. I have a pix of hydrangea I sprayed for a wedding and I don't think they look too bad. PM me if you want a pix!

I had time to experiment with the spray on hydrangea's. It worked really well, Ctherose, I did lightly layer it the way you said to and it does look richer. The bride is coming in this weekend to take a look. Hope she likes it, as she keeps saying she doesn't want anything painted. But this really doesn't look painted, came out pretty natural looking actually. Back before Just for Flowers spray, this would have been stiff and unnatural looking. Thanks all for your suggestions!

for teal, i have also seen dendrobiums dyed blue and green, one of those may be a close fit.
have you checked out Purple Rain freesia? Its one of my forites for adding in a punch of that bright purpley/fuschia color. Very vibrant!
also, i know they aren't black, but fiddlehead ferns (aka monkey tails) in deep brown could be a nice funky accent.
