We are looking at buying a florist shop in our home town. I am looking a community to ask questions and also help out with when we buy the shop. I used to own a gift basket business and had a similar community and it was a huge help.

I am not looking to just take info, I am looking at contributing also.

Do you have any floral experience or professional training??

Also, There were some mandatory questions on your sign up that you were supposed to answer. Please answer the questions and tell us a bit more about yourself and what your paln is to open a floral business. Anything so we may vote on you being a memeber here. Thanks

Sorry I had to get to work before I finished and hit the wrong button.

I am Jodi and we are looking at buying an already established flower shop in our home town. My mom and I will run it and neither of us have formal training but we love flowres and will go to school once we get all the numbers and offers established. We are very excited about this opportunity and look forward to learning about the industry.
  • What is your website address? Due to the fact we are still in negotiations and the employees do not know I can not reveal, but I will once the deal goes through
  • How long have you been in business? Brand New
  • Do you have any formal floral education? No but I plan on going to floral school
  • How were you referred to FlowerChat? Found it on the internet
  • What do you hope to gain from membership? Gain information on trends in the industry, a place to ask questions and get information.
  • What do you feel you can contribute to the community? I have strong experience in business and marketing, owned a successful gift basket business and participated in similar boards in the gift basket industry.
  • Do you operate from a commercial building or your residence? We will operate from a retail site.

Thank for coming back so quickly and answering those questions...

Welcome to flower chat...

You say you will be going to school aftre the deal goes through, Does the business you are looking into buying come with a staff of floral designers??

If it does, how many do you expect to stay once you take over??

If it does not, Is the owner going to stay on for a time until you learn the ropes???

Hi Jodi -

We've had a few folks join us in the past that were contemplating the purchase of a shop. This board is for florists already working in the profession so I do suggest that if you are approved for membership, you spend lots of time reading and understand we aren't here to educate newcomers from the ground up.

My best advice would be to invest in those classes and work at a successful store before investing your life's savings in a business. Being a florist is interesting, dynamic, rewarding and yet very highly competitive. Learning on-the-job can be very costly, especially for an owner.

If approved for membership, here are a couple threads that may contain discussions around many of the questions you have:

Cathy thanks for the articles, hopefully if I am approved I will be able to read them.

I understand what you are saying about educating new people.

Lori,

They do have employees and she is almost an absentee owner so she does not do any of the designs. She said she would stay on until the end of the year so I can learn the ropes.

Thanks!

The Queen is in the Room!!

When I read your stuff, I had to laugh really loud, and not to be strange,

But before you do anything, learn all you can, don't bye someone'else problem? If you are just bying an account list that don't mean nothin,,Sorry if I am offending, but I think that is why you came here to begin with. So if you want me to go on please let me know???

No you are not offending at all. I would like to why it is so funny so please do go on.

This is a business that is well established has corporate accounts, weddings, contracts, increase in sales, she does little to no marketing. I know the reason she is selling, I am not naive to buying a business. I owned my own business before, my husband has owned his own so we feel we know what we are getting into.

We have seen some numbers but we are waiting to get the rest and in the mean time I am researching and trying to learn a little about the biz. When I found this forum I thought great, I can really see what the industry is about and learn a few things from it.

Ok, Sorry I don't mean to offend, but I have seen so many folks , bye things that sometimes that don't work, and that of a flower shop is a big thing in its own,sWhen you say that there is wedding contracts, Well if the old owner doesn't state that there is you coming in as the new owner, then sometimes they are null and void, Know this real well, as Of today the brides are now in my store dealing with this with the girls on this very issue, So check them out, also on the accounts, make sure they are up to date before you bye, and all that her accounts personal ones are up to date as well, also if someone tell you they have made 35,000.00 last month call the whole sale company they deal with and ask how much they spent to get that...Well I have to run, because the place is packed..

Hi Jodi... it appears you have been approved so you may wander and traverse the community at will. Cathy is right, we are happy to help to some degree. :)

I would be interested in knowing more about your experiences in the Gift Basket world.

Hey Jgilmore, your situation is exactly what I was under in the summer of 2005. Since we didn't fail (at least not yet), I would say it's possible to succeed even if you had zero experience in the industry.

There are a couple of things that you might want to remember.

Firstly, because you had no experience in this industry, it is critical to have good employees. The problem is that, initially, you actually aren't able to tell good ones from bad ones. My suggestion is to avoid the employees who behave like s/he knows everything. They could kill your business overnight. Question everything they do.

Secondly, your experience as a former business owner is a tremendous asset (I, too, had experience in running a small business when I bought a flower shop). The part most difficult for you is to figure out the profitability of wire services. You will find a numerous number of info and opinions on this topic here. Also it's imperative to predict that you will lose as much as 30% of the sales after taking over the shop.

Thirdly, you should find your own job in your store as soon as possible. I started out as a flower-cleaning guy in my own store. Now I "moved up" a little and am doing deliveries and web commerce. It's important to show to your employees that you, the owner, is working hard. As someone with no experience, you don't have an automatic charisma to begin with. It takes time to earn some respect from your own employees.

Finally, suggestions from the previous owner or other florists are of course useful, but only to a degree. They say all kinds of things that may or may not apply to your particular situation. Or ever worse, they may be completely wrong. I think that, in the end, you would have to rely on your own judgment and instinct to sort things out. This applies to anything you will read in this forum.... including this one. :)
