These days our brides are having more children in the wedding party than the usual flower girl and ring bearer. We're looking for more jobs or things to put in their hands. For us, the typical choices are:
drop petals
carry the rings
carry a sceptor of flowers like a princess wand
carry their (or the Brides) favorite teddy bear adorned with flowers
carry a basket of flowers
walk in the dog (when it's a part of the wedding party)

I'm looking for more ideas to share with the Brides.

In churches where there are "no petals" rules, I have had flower girls carry baskets, or small pails of loose flowers to hand out as they walk up the aisle, usually just a few to people sitting at the end of the rows. Its a great photo opp.

Have them carry a sphere ball of flowers or a cone very cute shown above with bride and bridesmaids bouquets.

OK, I've got a few ideas for you...

Have them carry baskets with scrolled up poem the Bride and Groom have chosen then the wedding date.

Also at my wedding ( 30 years ago next month), we had Grooms cake. It is (I believe) a Canadian tradition - from my Mom- Fruit Cake, cut in very small pieces and wrapped. Each single woman is to take it home, put it under her pillow that night and she will dream of the man she will marry. At least I think that was what Mom told me. OK...You Canuks...set us all straight on the real scoop for Grooms Cake.

We also had favors of bells filled with bird seed, covered with tulle and two little rings attached with B & G's name and wedding date on paper in a basket for the little darlings to carry.

At my daughter's we did a similar thing, but gave everyone a candle instead of the birdseed. Still had the little poem on the paper with the wedding date and stuff tied with a ribbon.

We're finding more churches in our area that won't allow the petals drop. I really like the idea of handing out flowers as they walk up the aisle. Do you use just the flower head or left on the stem?

Twila,

I just read your post again about the cake under the pillow to dream of the man you will marry...perhaps I'm tired after my late night walk...but did you say fruitcake? Yup...that's about what you'll get when you get married! Oh forgive me...did you say ~small piece~? Well...now there's something to really look forward to! What an insane tradition!

LOL!! Can always count on Di for a

the whole thing. We have previously used mini gerbera stems, roses, poms, daisies, etc. We also have used the fairy wands, (spheres of flowers on a ribbon covered dowel, with trailing ribbon.) Those are VERY popular with the little girls.

Depending the venue, we have had flower girls stand outside the church / site and hand out flowers, programs and bubbles (for after the procession leaves the church) to all those attending. Great photo ops as well when the tiny princesses are handing flowers to Gram or a Great Aunt.

But I have say I really like the idea them moving the flower arrangements to the reception location, attaching the pew markers and such. . . Do you think we could get in trouble with the local labor boards?

We are on the ocean, sometimes we use starfish and ribbons on our scepters for the flowergirls. Also instead of the unity candle we have a sand ceremony grooms side pours sand into a grooms side vessel and brides side does the same in brides side vessel then both moms pour them into single container and officiant has blessing then container is closed and families are united. It is a good idea to have flower girls to be sand bearers and to bring sand to altar (sometimes sand is in wedding colors). Also when there are two flowergirls they can hold on to each end of a flowered garland and place it on the floor where the bride and groom stand. or they may carry a flowery wreath symbolizing eternal love and hang it in a predetermined place (on pews or create a wreath stand. They can also deliver the vows to the officiant.

Add minature bride, this is common in the hispanic community.
In our area we can also have the flower girls, give a handfull of petals to the guests to throw at the end of the wedding instead of rice. This bride had 6 flower girls 2 maid of honors, 12 attendents...we oh my gosh or oh yes!!
