Outlook less than rosy for 2 local floral chains

About half of the 13 remaining Johnston the florist and Shackelford's & Maxwell's floral shops in the region would close late this year under a bankruptcy reorganization plan being written by the four brothers who own them.

Two North Huntingdon-based companies -- Guffey Brothers Inc., which operates the shops, and Johnston's Greenhouses Inc., which grows many of the flowers and plants they sell -- filed for protection from creditors during the past few days under Chapter 12 of the bankruptcy code, reserved for family farms.
"We have taken a pretty big hit the last couple of years," said Mark Guffey, the president, who with his brothers David, Steve and Andy plan to close four to seven shops after the holidays, but keep the combined businesses' 150 employees and add new products and services to revive sales.

These two companies were once powerhouse operations in SoWestern PA.

Knowing the Guffey's personally (I spent 3 weeks with them installing their computer network, and still talk to Dave from time to time) (remember Herb? what a blast that was) I must say I am surprised.

They "had" a fantastic operation, very diverse, very large...just goes to show ya, you just never know...

Keep a sharp eye.

Yes Mark, it was a GREAT Tech. experience...one of my last with FTD. To think of how many folks our team trained, the logistics...wow.

I was shocked, personally, but this should serve as a wake up call to everyone. When you think you are 'untouchable' by the downturn in our industry (OG's, you name it) you can fall victim to our ever-changing times.

The Guffey family & ours go way back - to the day when my Father went to Penn State.

We MUST adjust to our evolving industry, and watch your back end...costs, fees, overhead, debt... So many things cutting into our profits, it amazing.

- Herb
