I currently do not have a website.

I am in the planning stages of opening a wholesale florist.

I have no formal education.

I found FlowerChat through a Google search.

I hope to get helpful advice and networking partners.

I will operate my wholesaler from a commercial location.

At this time, we are still in the planning phases. We are researching to determine if the local market would support a new wholesaler, and where the best location would be.

In the beginning, we would provide wholesale perishable and non-perishable goods to retail shops, as well as clients such as planners for weddings, parties, and special events. Our goal is to eventually provide the design services for these events as well, but in order to do that we are going to need an experienced and quality designer.

There are other plans, but these are just some of the start-up plans. We have a vision for continued growth in many facets of the industry.

Thanks,

Jeremy

Hi Jeremy,

Thanks for your interest in our community. I am a little confused by you intro. If you are looking to start a wholesale floral supplier, wouldn't you then be in direct competition with your customers when you started providing the design services directly to clients? Are you planning to sell only to legitimate retail florists (or just use the name wholesale meaning cheap)?

It is a current problem in our industry that too many wholesalers are starting to be in direct competition with us, for things like Easter lilies for churches, cut flowers for fundraisers and the like.

Have you ever worked at a fresh flower wholesaler? What prompted you to want to open a flower wholesaler? What is your work background? Sorry to be nosy, I am just curious.

First of all, thank you Amy for asking the questions.

Now, I know the area his is proposing to open in. So I filll qualified to reply here.

First, Jeremy, you don't know anything about our industry. Sounds as if you just maybe lost your job and decided this looked like fun. Well let me be the first to tell you that it is not all fun and games.

If you had researched this area and idea very much, you'd know that there is a hardgoods supplier that has had his business for sale for some time with no takers. Doesn't that say anything to you. I have bought out 4 shops recently that closed because of this economy near Dallas area and I declined two others.

This is the worst possible time for a novice to try and open a highly demanding business like flower wholesaling. Greenleaf, Knowles, DWF, First Choice, Macarena Gardens, and a large well established tropical vendor near LoveField and several others would eat you alive. Way further east around Sulpher Springs might support a new wholesaler, but some of these other guys go there already by truck routes.

You sound like a youngster, so I'll speak like a mom, Dont jump in to this.
You need to work in the industry first for a year or so. Do you even know where to get the flowers you'll sell? Do you have a building in mind, do you have coolers or sources for coolers big ones, do you have the means $$ to pay those large electric bills while you build a steady clientele,do you have refrigerated trucks, workers with experience, computer systems, phone lines, workers comp, building insur, auto insur.,sources for hardgoods,(Syndicate Sales and Luv and others would eat you alive on hardgoods, plus most of us by direct).

If you expect us to help you on this forum when all you want from us is the information to eventually compete against us. Forget it.

Sorry, not being mean but I vote NO.

Good luck.

My plan is to supply to the retailers. Part of my reason for joining this group was to discuss my plan with wholesalers and retailers both, to see what I may be doing right, and what i may be doing wrong. By the sounds of your response, maybe I should just stick to wholesale. I definitely do not want to step on any toes, especially trying to open a start-up business, so if that means sticking to one thing, then that is what I will do. I was under the impression the planners/coordinators were customers of the wholesalers, and just thought that if they were buying from me, then maybe I could assist with design as well.

As for my background, I have never worked for a wholesaler. That is another reason why I am seeking the advice of my peers on this forum. I have however been involved with the day to day operation of a retail shop. My family owned and operated a retail shop for over 40 years.

I don't mind "nosy." I came here for answers, and in order for me to get the answers I will need, I am sure I will have to answer plenty of questions. As I said, I am not looking to start a business to step on any toes. My other future plans for growth are primarily dealing with wholesale, so even if I do not offer design, I still feel that my business can be successful.

Jeremy,

I posted a long reply for you, but it got lost before posting. I will repost later for you.

My brain is fried after today.

Jeremy, you sound very sweet, but inevitably "toe stepping" happens in any industry that is already being served unless you have identified a niche that is being under served or completely new.

Not that I am saying run away, by all means if you are wanting to get your hands dirty in an industry that has lots of money move through it but does not necessarily get many rich, go for it!

This industry certainly seems like sweetness and light on the outside, but are you really prepared for the logistical issues of moving product that is a perishable as lettuce and not thought of as valuable as lettuce.

Sorry if I sound odd today, valentines has me tuckered out.

Jeremy,

I hope you are still checking the forum, I remembered part of the long post that got lost in cyberspace.

You said your family was in retail for 40 years. What kind of retail was that?
Did it have anything to do with the floral industry?

As I said before, going further east of Dallas area to near Mount Pleasant or Sulphur Springs I think a fresh flower wholesaler might be doable, but Forney is just to close to the very well established big guys in/near Dallas.

Have you stopped in at Bow Wood Florist in Forney, to chat with them and see what they can tell you? There are many many flower shops going under all over the country, so this is a difficult time to be setting up a new floral wholesaler.

It is a very dirty, hard, competitive business. You are welcome to PM(private message) me on this forum, and we'll talk details if you want to. I am always up for helping where I can.
