I don't know about other parts of the country but for the past 2 weeks we have had dozens and dozens of kamikaze squirrels running across the roadways.

They wait on the side of the road until an innocent driver is spotted and then dart across the road to see if you will either hit them or swerve to miss them potentially causing an accident! What could their ulterior motive be?

I have had 3 near misses in the past 2 days. One extremely loyal squirrel ran across the highway during rush hour. When no one hit him the first time, he ran back across again!

I think I need to contact the animal conspiracy guy to see if this is a nationwide situation!

In all seriousness, it might be because the weather is changing they are moving their homes, looking for water, or even mating. I can count over 100 dead squirrels between the flowershop and my home.

Anyone else noticing this strange event?:GP (I know that's not a squirrel but it was the closest thing I could find!)

What a hoot! I have killed one (or at least he wasn't moving when I last saw him) and missed a few. They seem to be the young ones. I guess it has something to do with the changing seasons (or adolescence!). But the worst was the rat that was snuffling around in my garden this morning. Yeww!

That's been going on in NY for years. It starts right about now. I've come to the conclusion that they realize they didn't gather enough food for the coming winter and they are taking what they believe is their only way out..................SUICIDE.

We have it here too.....I have been told that they get crazed come the fall just getting ready for winter...they get rushed with the onset of the cold weather to build their nests and gather their food stockpiles...in their rush to do the necessary things a whole bunch get killed in their haste...I guess it is natures way of thinning the squirrel herd...

just the time of the year. I have a mom who dives from a tree onto my feeder - almost impaled herself yesterday - and misses more times than she makes it. I don't know why she hasn't broken a leg or her back. She's jumping from over 15 ft in the air, missing, hitting the baffle, then falling to the ground.
We have one in town that runs across the electric lines over our 4 lane street.... that's one smart squirrel although many of his brothers and sisters are flat on the road under the lines he's scurrying across.

Reading this post brings back a memory.........Mom loved her squirrels......We had a back porch before our renovations and she would sit out there and watch the antics of our squirrels. We had dried corn cobs impaled on nails.........squirrel feeders and the like.

More than a few would act almost tame...especially the younger ones. More than a few would end up eating out of Mom's lap.
