We worked with rectangular & cube styled vases for the past holiday. We sold 6 autumn roses with wheat, catts, grasses from outisde, dusty miller etc etc - it was so pretty & sold well. I really liked the idea of using a ribbon tied around the vase, top to bottom, like a present, with a generous shoelace on top, poking between the flowers. What I found though, was that once the vase comes to room temp, all that condensation collected in the pretty plaid ribbon we used, and it was sopping wet. Also noticed that if we weren't careful carrying, the water sloshed up onto that pretty shoelace bow, wet again.

I really want to do these for X-mas, carrying over the whole present & ribbon idea. Any ideas about how to keep that ribbon from turning into a wet mess?

I have done similar - I used Bedford brand wired poly ribbon - bright colors, shiny texture....but hard as anything to tie a tight knot. So, to compensate...after I did the cross of ribbon to look like the present....I glued the bow on top.

polyester ribbon is the best for use around water.

tip from Jay S.

What about the nylon sheer type?? It will get wet but it dries faster....

We use the sheer ribbon only- it works best for us and it does dry faster.

Poly, like Plastic? I'll have to look into the wired type - the plain ploy/plastic might be a little too simple ...

We use a lot of organza ribbon - I'll have to try that. I just loved the look of the patterned heavy ribbon, and the visual statement it made.

Thanks for the ideas!

I think Berwick is the maker of the Bedford Brand. Usually, this ribbon has a wire running through the center of the ribbon rather than on the edges like typical wired ribbon. It is a heavy, shiny, poly/plastic - usually bright jewel or metallic tones. I don't recall ever seeing it in a pattern though.......All I have ever worked with has been solid color.

I do a party design where I use a soaked third block of oasis wrapped in plastic, then overlaid with mylar film, after securing with glue and tape to make sure the wet block is watertight, I glue on the ribbon like a present.....with a bow positioned slightly to one side of an opening cut into the top of the 'present' where a few colorful, bright, blooms are inserted. I got the idea from an old PFD magazine on partywork.

Try doing BIG FAT HONKIN leaves inside the vase like Dieffenbachia or Croton. I assume you used a block of Oasis inside the vase and wanted to cover the mechanics.

OR.....

again assume Oasis is used.

Pull the arrangement out of the block, refrigerate on a shallow dish and leave the Glass block outside.

OR

try using that Tuxedo ribbon

OR...

just bring block up to room temp and slip a ribbon on after said block returns to room temp.

OR

pay no attention to me................. ;)

Nope, clear water, with the ribbon UP the vase. Grab your square vase, put a yard of ribbon on the counter & set the vase on top of it. Pull the ribbon up & tie a big shoelace (or tiffany style, if you're high end) ribbon on the top. Then fill with water. Then add flowers.

try using that Tuxedo ribbon
That might work, too.

Not that simple ... see my detailed step by step above.

pay no attention to me................. ;)

Now who could ever do that

ps - have you been drinking? If not, start immediately to catch up to your typing! Only people from NJ say BIG FAT HONKIN, without the aid of liquor.

Now I know exactly what you're talking about - looks kind of like the old Christmas ribbon candy, and it is impossible to tie a knot. That ribbon would be great for X-mas. Thanks!

I have been on the road all afternoon, doing some PR work and delivering poinsettias.

I got home at 6 and yes there has been a few cocktails poured.

since you are a "GIRL" i suppose you like all that ribbon anyway.

But for me let me see your stems!

Okay, stop drinking. Seriously. And step away from the flower display.

I think its time for me to step away from the computer and go to bed.

Unless you want to go into CHAT AND YACK!

joe
Love to yack, but I need to go home. Go to bed Joe. You clearly need rest, and with all the stuff you inhale, the alcohol works much more quickly! May you dream of endless rows of potting benches, with perfectly colored, pest free flowers and low fuel prices to keep it all warm!

The only thing i want to dream of is a boat load of cash and empty greenhouse benches.

good night

I got the idea from an old PFD magazine on partywork.

Ha! I've seen that issue! and have done the design too... wonderful to send to the High school with a balloon!!

HA !!! I didn't think I was the only one who has saved every copy of his PFD's and refers back to them. I also have saved all my Florist's Reviews, Flowers&, and Florist magazines too. - Although I have seperated the duplicates gotten at various shows and stuff that I give to a friend and fellow designer friend of mine.
