Kmart will open Floral "Markets" within all its Super Kmarts this year...
This is being done with Fantasy Farms, a Miami based grower/importer, wholesaler/Retailer.
Fantasy Farms leases the space from Kmart, and is responsible for the staffing and operation, with Kmart recieving a percentage of sales.
MY take:
Far as I know this is the first attempt by a Grower/importer to get into the main stream retail side of the floral industry. As I see it, it will allow Fantasy Farms, which plans to "Brand" it's product to move into a market, and offer fresh product direct from the grower at a severly reduced price over traditional retail outlets for fresh flowers.
They grow it, ship it and sell it...the closest we have seen yet, to an all in one approach. Many will say all the same things about this model that they have about the rest like HD, Wal-mart and others, but these folks are looking to compete with Wal-mart, and we will be the ones caught in the price war that is enevitable...
