We were looking through a wedding magazine (Elegant Bride) and we saw a really nice idea that we are trying to figure out how to do...the picture shows 4-5 large floating carnation "balls" with different designs on each, making a backyard pool look absolutely fabulous (see pic).

We figured that it probably just carns picked into a large styrofoam ball, but cannot figure out where we could buy such large styro balls. Does anyone here have any ideas about pulling this off?

With all the glueing going on, could it be large beach balls blown up and maybe spray glued with that artsy glue and then flowers glued onto it with floral glue...do they look like whole carns to you or petals? I really could not tell..but excellant idea....very "us" down here isn't it? Maybe JTV has an answer...hey this is a great idea for one of his webisodes.....Now where is that pool guy with my cool refreshment????

I can't actually tell if the bottoms are flat, or round. If they are flat, you can make a loose ball shape using sheets of stryo, stacked. Just make gradiant circles and stack them, leave the bottom flat and you've got a floater. In theory anyway ... sometimes you get to making these things and the theory goes pfffft out the window.

I like the beach ball glue idea - then they would actually roll around in the pool, but I doubt oasis glue would hold up underwater, and pan melt glue would melt the vinyl ball.

pretty cool concept. I like it.

Boy ain't that the truth...we like your idea of making a "gradient" ball. That could work. We found that Oasis makes an 8" styro ball, which is OK but not really big enough for those big ones. Do the big box craft stores sell big styro balls?

Holy Jamoses! These are some big balls!
Pretty pricey - they're a different kind of styro, more for architectural stuff.
I don't think Michaels has giant styryo balls - but those 8" will easily become 12" after you start adding flowers. The balls increase in size dramatically once you start adding a stem and a flower - easily add 4" to the ball diameter, and you could stretch it out a little more ...

Tracy, I've think you've done it. Those are exactly what we were looking for, and yes pricey but not too bad. Thanks for the link!

Although for some reason now, though, I can't get that ancient AC/DC song "I've Got Big Balls" outta my head right now...

I feel good because ....

when I saw the photo the first thing I thought of was adhesive gluing carns/flowers to beachballs and I see I'm with the smart thinkers .... The adhesive glue is waterproof for some time isn't it? The idea of the styro glued together and made into a ball is a good one too. You can shave down the styro once together and make the shape of the ball. With styro you could also pin or skewer them into the styro to make it more secure. You need something that no matter what weight is added, will still float. A trial of the adhesive glue, placed in water for a length of time, would be a good test. The glue they use for the Rosebowl parade floats would be a thing to try too because they have held together during some major rainstorms. That would be a funky way to decorate for a party!

When I looked at these and the question I too thought of the Rosebowl floats and the product they use... another thing to find out.

I would be wary of using pins in a pool area... just in case they happen to become dislodged. That could create quite a problem.

We have floated the 6 and 8 inch oasis spheres with solid carns. They float without a problem. One thing you could do for a larger ball is start with a square of regular poly-styrene (the green kind that comes in sheets from the wholesaler). Then pan glue oasis around the square until you have the size you want and carve it into a ball shape. These get very heavy when wet, so I recommend taking them to the set up dry and soak when you get there. You sould soak them right in the pool and pop the carns in while they are in the pool.
If you didn't want the weight of the soaked foam you could make the sphere totally out of green styro and steel pick the carns in.
