I have recently been asked to join the Board of Director for our local Ballet Company. I am really excited about this and think that not only can I contribute to their organization, it will also be great for my shop since I will be in an entirely new circle of people.

In January, they are planning a Latin Themed event. In the past they have done "casino night" but the gambling laws have changed in our state which makes this no longer feasible.

I am thinking that our shop can decorate for this event. I am thinking that if we use really nice realistic silks not only can we decorate this venue to the max, we can bring all items back and redesign them just in time for Valentine's Day (window and silk sales).

Everyone here has the most incredible design abilities and I would like opinions on what you would do to really create something spectacular, reuseable, and not break the bank. Since we do this everyday, this should be a no brainer...right?!

Remember, this is Latin themed not necessarily mexican. I am thinking lots of reds, fruit maybe using fans (the kind with lace), etc. By the way, it will be called "Winter Rumba...a night of latin heat"

I'm thinking more of a Salsa/Rumba concept..maybe cylinders with red boas around the base and a red amarylis inside with black marble like stones and some acolytees in the base..or even the round bases that have uplight battery operated? All could be rentals and the cylinders reused...if its ballet then maybe an upscale look...I think of fans as more Spain...Latin here in S'fl is a little different...

Love it! Even before the coffee!

I agree with Sher's idea to have it more elegant than fans.

How much are you doing for the event? Do you have a budget at all, or is it all "great advertising"? Will there be a linen company to work with? How about the caterer's role? Sorry, I am one of those anal people who have to know the details before my imagination get's away from me (and I spend time designing a whole event when only a few buffet pieces are needed).

We had our first meeting about the event last night so the details are not complete. What I do know is the theme. It will be at the Rotunda of a local college (very open..lots of space...soaring ceilings). Lots of brides use this for receptions. It overlooks the river. They are looking at about 150-200 people. There will be a silent auction and all that stuff that goes along with fundraisers.

They are currently working on securing music, food, etc. They need to find out what all the college is including (I think that they are the ones that are supplying the linens).

They didn't ask me for any free handouts or anything. I offered to bring a few items in silk that I will take back to my shop after the event. They do offer advertising in exchange for services, so I wouldn't mind if they included an ad in the nutcraker program and other services.

In this area, florists are not known for getting involved in this type of organization. This would be a first. It is the week after the local Bridal Expo so this is a great time to get our name out especially if I can come up with some really exciting designs. Most shops in our area do the usual round/mound look. Most shops do not attend trade shows, design shows or anything like that. I am one of 2 in our entire state that is even on flowerchat.

Really bright colors for sure, pinatas and maybe maracas from the party store unless you could make fake ones out of Styrofoam, could see those sticking out of an arrangement. We have some really nice silk red pepper bushes, either from Sullivan or Silk Botanica, very colorful. How about sombreros with flowers sticking out of the top of the hat lol.

After a formal ballet, I think that people will like to, " Let Loose", and enjoy a party more informal. Using brite colors(solid) for table cloths, maybe 5 different colors and mix on the tables. This is a fresh idea, not silk, but it is very affective and inexpensive. Mount 2 bamboo canes in a clay pot or something with weight, place the canes upright,3 feet tall, attach a piece of strofoam on the tops of the canes, then green pin Emerald or Jade to make a Palapa (Thatched Roof) that people can set under. Candles can be used. etc. and of course flowers. Place Maracas and percussion instruments(Latin countries) on the tables and let the guest join in with the Latin Beat. Have plenty of fried bananas and your fav. drinks, people will talk about it for years!!

I am so jealous! I have always wanted to do a Latin event. Have you thought of using something really different like chili peppers? I think garlands of chili peppers strung in various spots around the room would look great. They would also look cool in the centerpieces. What if you could get some of those big bunches of the green mini banana looking things? Those are totally Latin to me, and they would look cool on the food table. And Palm leaves... I could go on! Good luck with your event.
