[h=1]Still Looking For A New Year’s Resolution? How About Learning To Code …[/h]Excerpt:
Signing up for the free service will hook you up with a new programming course each week. Codecademy co-founder Zach Sims tells me that the courses will be a mix of everything so people have “well-rounded basics,” beginning with Javascript and then continuing to server-side languages like Ruby and Python. He hopes that the curriculum will turn people into competent developers by the end of the year.
I signed up. No plans to replace our webmaster ;) , but learning more about Javascript sounds great.

There's a social aspect to this program and participants can earn badges and interact with friends (if they choose).

You can work on each lesson at convenient times.. which is another huge plus for busy florists.

Anyone else game?

Heck yeah, I'm game ~ thanks Cathy! I honestly don't really even know what javascript is so this is exactly what I'm looking for. I spent several hours today trying to write a CSS for my website for a background image. Although I could make it happen in an example, I could not get it to go live on my website.

I did, however, manage to muck up my home page on my website, (not with the CSS ~ hmmm~ I don't think so anyway). Hopefully I will learn more than just enough to make Ryan pull his hair out ~ ;)

Wouldn't it make more sense to invest the time selling flowers?

Maybe they offer a course on buying foreclosed homes or repairing delivery vehicles as well.

There are thousands of quality coders out there looking for work.

I think I will continue focusing my efforts on selling flowers

I have to agree with Doug on this one. I'll never be good at that stuff no matter how many classes I take so I'm leaving it up to my web site team! But good luck to those of you that are so inclined!

I've considered going to "mini school" for HVAC and actually DID for Automobile Repair. Some of the simple things I can now do myself but more importantly, I can at least understand what the heck I'm being charged for when I hire someone else to do something.

I like to learn, I never know when a small snippet is going to come in handy.

This is about selling flowers... and I already do fix vehicles, have since I was 16, and there's more money in buying vacant land that foreclosed homes...

It's not necessarily about learning to code, it's about challenging my mind...

Not an either/or... I've been holding back adding JS features to our site - since they're in a language I don't really understand.

We DO have a webmaster who handles the dirty work, but I really want to understand the guts of the workings.

Learning basic HTML years ago really helped understand best linking practices and those lessons have more than paid for themselves - many times over.

Bottom line, we sell more flowers by investing in web knowledge. Too many florists have been taken advantage of by not understanding basic web info.

And this is how we got into the boat we are in now. Don't worry about the internet, just sell your flowers. Don't worry about a website, just sell your flowers. Don't worry about a Point of Sale System, just sell your flowers. Don't worry about marketing, just sell your flowers. All the while the wire services were more than happy to take payment so we could sit and play with the pretty flowers.
Now what... now everyone has a finger in our pie and we are clueless. FORGET THAT.

I for one refuse to let others have all of the control. What Ryan does with our website is fantastic, but if I can take it up a notch then why not. If it motivates me to sell my flowers in a more creative way then I'm on it.

Hey Java Script buddy! You know thats what I have been playing with more on my site.

It really is easy you just got to sit down and take the time to play with it.

Of course you know who you can call for free advice!!!

Okay I am almost done with my first section. I am on lesson 8 "while you wait", last question (#4). Is there help forum, or a place to ask questions, get input or whatnot? I know I will get it but it's frustrating me LOL. Just wanted to see if anyone else was stuck so we could talk it out. Thanks gang!

Just to clarify my previous comments. I think it is a great idea for anyone to want to further their education and if that is the reason they want to learn how to code, power to them. However, if they are learning to code with the expectation they can use it to improve their website and expand their business I suggest there are far more productive and easier ways to achieve that goal.
