I put this under the wire services category because people are so much NOT using them. Of course, many still are - but I am referring to the many orders that we are getting from people mentioning that they did not want to go through middlemen, but would rather talk to the florist.

Most major specific win/win case this week was a lady who spent 60 minutes (yes she said 60 minutes - no kidding) on the phone with 1-800-floppers with a last minute birthday order and they finally had to tell her they did not have anyone to deliver the flowers for her. Not sure why they never call us - they have a half dozen times a long time ago, but we would not have done it for them anyway, maybe they figured that out.

Of course I saw a prime opportunity to make her day and most likely gain a loyal customer in the process. We were all whipped and Neal really did not want to make another delivery especially since he was off the clock at this point. I charged $19.95 delivery and she was tickled to death that it was going that day. I called her with a delivery confirmation and she informed me we have her future business for this man friend that lives in our city.

I must add that any florist that does not have a website these days is really missing out on some good customer service as so many call that are looking at our website and want to discuss exactly what we have. Seems like lots of people understand that just because you have a picture of it does not mean it will be exactly that, so they love to call and find out what you CAN actually do. I also love selling them what they really want rather than try and guess when someone says, "a Christmas arrangement". That could be a couple dozen or more different things, as many people have an idea in their head that they fail to inform you about, anyway websites are the bomb these days!

Good call Patty! I still preach the floral word that WS won't be around in 7-10 years. As soon as the internet target ages into our target market, bye bye WS. Well, let me back up.. WS won't be bye bye, but will evolve more into a 1800flowers model. Communication is the most important variable we need to keep in mind when it comes to opening secrets to the future of our industry.

Agreed. Evolve or die.

Dear FlowerChatters....

assuming that wire services will die, anyone have a solution??
Patty struck a nerve with me....
We've experienced over 100% increase in online direct orders, whether online, or phone ins on online catalogues.
A large number of this year's Christmas customers researched sites I've never seen, yet, called US, with the site address, and their selection.....has been pretty amazing!!
We blocked EVERY SINGLE ATTEMPT by 1800FLWRS to filter their orders through!!....an operator complained openly about the difficulty THEY were having in getting THEIR orders filled!!
EVERY OTHER OG, I filtered, I GOT sending info from EVERY SENDER, from the recipients, except for one...that was suspicious to start with!
I WILL USE THEIR DATABASES against them.....THEIR "customers" are MY stolen customers, and I'm getting them BACK!!
The WS I use, is giving me free leads....I went after them with flyers that went out with EVERY GATHERED ORDER...for the last 3 months, AND,
the OG's stopped sending to me!
SO, we've STILL got the WS infrastructure in place to defend our hard work...we just gotta get off our butts, and turn this around on them!!

Mikey,
Do you mind sharing your particular techinque for prying sender info out of the recipients. I'm all for this one.

TIA

Patty:
I am glad you have a happy new customer.

I am assuming your normal delivery fee is not $19.95.

You performed admirably by taking and fulfilling this order on short notice today. However, did you negate any of the good PR with the higher delivery fee?

Bloomz: I'm not Mikey, but I just ask the recipient for the info.

I am going to start sending asks messages back to all WS and OG orders for this info. I legitmately need this info in order to add that info to my delivery cards. One nice feature about my order entry software is that I can, with a click of a button, add Acknowledgment (Sender's) Addresses to the card.

This is especially handy for funeral orders. Family has the info right where they need it and they don't have to call us and have us spend time looking for it.

"We'll be glad to fill your order for the amount you've provided, once you've sent us the sender's name(s), address, & phone number...
Thank you from the friendly folks at Holdens"

You're right - that is not our normal delivery fee. In some cases a higher fee will most likely negate good PR. I always play it by ear and deal with people on an individual basis. This woman was thrilled to death that we were able to deliver for her after spending a wasted hour with 1-800-floppers only for them to tell her they could not get anyone to deliver at this late date. She had all by lost hope, so in this case charging $19.95 for delivery is not going to work against us. She said we most assuredly have her business from now on. In some cases - yes - I do think it negates the whole attempt. Sometimes I think it's just a hit or miss attempt, but I do try and get enough to compensate whoever I get to deliver their one last minute order. Not an easy call or situation, each time is an inidvidual call on what to do.

I always send one of my nieces something for Christmas, but I buy it and ship it way ahead of time. She's in Florida and we're in Detroit area. This year we did not shop so I never saw anything. So yesterday just like all the other last minute-ers - I called a florist (and gift) shop in Lakeland and I ended up sending her the TF snowman since my niece loves decorating in January with snowmen. I could tell the lady on the phone - knowing I personally am sending it and the one receiveing it used to work here, well - I could hear it in her condescending voice, "I can't believe you waited this late. You want me to describe our gift items to you, maybe you can tell me what you're looking for and that would be easier." She was civil, but definitely let me know I should have known better than to wait until Dec 23rd. Now that I think of it, she wasn't very nice. Well, my niece called today and loved the Tf snowman. I sent it FTD of course. Most florists let you do that. She already sent me an email with a picture of it. They did a great job, they added some hypericum and variegated pitt and used some other kind of Christmas green for the arms. It was very nice. Nowadays it's so easy to send a pic of your gift to the sender. I wonder how many do that?

Done rambling now..........................

Bravo All!

By all early indications, a GREAT c-mas for the Rothe Florists Family.
Up 8% overall, as of early this morning.

I have NEVER rejected/refused so many orders in my life. The OG's were simply reaching at straws to get orders filled. One order from 800 came in at 1pm today, came over Dove. Refused. 20 min later came over MERCURY (you know their despirate then...) - rejected. Then, they tried to call it in TEL....nope...

This goes for FTD.COM as well. Sorry, they have no one to blame but themselves. TEL.COM the same - no 2nd choices even as of late last night! Get real...sold old of that goofy snowman last monday. But at least FTD.COM was giving open orders today...for what it's worth.

All have a WONDERFUL break, get some rest, and enjoy the holiday.

...and to all a good night...

Finally Herb.....

an honest florist!!
I was getting all kind of zanny answers from florists reporting increases of 15 and 20 %!!
Just did our numbers, and for the month of December, we're up 5.1%, and for the week of Christmas we're up by...get this...5.1%
Even IF I tried to fudge the numbers, how weird is that??
It's time to celebrate the birth of Baby Jesus, and a family that STILL accepts me for what I am!!
MC to all
