What do all of you do to keep a positive attitude? Is there a certain show, movie, etc. that you watch? Do you listen to CD's of John Maxwell, The Secret, etc? Is there a place that you go, a mantra you say, a church service you attend?

All thoughts welcome!!!!

I do follow John Maxwell and I have a Monday AM group with about 12 - 15 other business people. We hold each other up, encourage and share what is working for us. I also read one book a week (short read or try to) and only ones that are encouraging. I quit reading all the trade publications and began to listen to those who lead, not ones who follow (if that makes sense). I also attend a spirit filled church and when every week our Pastor(s) close with a word, attitude comes up many times.

Woods and Water every weekend.... and knowing that I am but a small speck on a big rock, and that others have it way worse off than I ever will. And that the Great Spirit will not give me more than I can handle, even when I have my own doubts.

This is a crazy biz, we can go from 4 to 34 deliveries in 2 hours like we did today. Scramble for the right product, preform miracles on a moments notice, settle disputes (cause some too), purchase, sell, give.... it's just a normal day in the flower shop biz~!

Pat,

It's right around the corner! :)

Seriously though, if you can take a day and make it your own with NO FLOWER SHOP thinking allowed, it really helps. What everybody is describing here is the same thing, you have to get totally away from it and not let it creep in at all. It's called "Me" time and I'm only just learning how to do that myself.

I took a very long hiatus, and am now finally feeling enthused about this business again ~ I've just barely been going through the motions. Don't let it get as bad as I did, you absolutely need that down time in order to recharge. That's where I found my positive attitude again.

the BEST "mojo" remedies lay in "outta the shop" and "away from the crazy".....even if it's for a day....we are very much like Mark alluded to, gotta get out, gotta lean on a tree in the woods, get you feet offa the floor, and into the water!
The crazy house mentality of our industry right now is enough to push ANY hard driving, high achieving, problem solving souls into debilitating fatigue!

Good advice from everyone. I find that when my attitudes wanes (at work) it's usually because I have lost my vision/direction for the big picture and have become bogged down with everyday annoying stuff. If I can find some inspiration to rekindle that vision, my attitude perks way up.

Getting away does help to see the "bigger picture". I find nature (the colors are getting to be gorgeous here in northern WI), my family and friends, and church help.

Sandy you hit the nail right on the head! I know I need time off but that is just not going to happen right now. My business partner has a long term costly illness so I need to be here. We haven't been busy enough to have our part timiers here either.

I didn't get a true vacation this year because I went to the AIFD symposium to test and I think that is where things starting going downhill, especially my attitude and outlook. It could also be the beginning of "THE CHANGE"! LOL

It feels like there are little mice nibbling away at everything, including my sanity. Just off the top of my head, I've had 2 sundays in a row of funeral work so no days off. One was a $300 casket spray of yellow roses. Special ordered the day before, processed and hydrated, made the spray, delivered it on my day off (Sunday). It wasn't 60 minutes later that the funeral director called saying the lady was complaining that the roses were wilted. WTF??? I can't get anything fresher than that!

Yesterday, had one lady call (who is a regular customer of ours) asking if we had helium. I tell her yes. She says that she has called all around town, including Kroger, and no one has helium. Kroger tells her that there is a helium shortage. When I give her the price of the balloons, she says, "it sounds a bit pricey". WTF?? So, you know that no one has it. You know there is a shortage, yet you complain about the price.

Next call, lady with a church wants to know what is the cheapest thing that we can send to a funeral. After I tell her, she wants to know if we will give a discount because they are a church and because so and so flower shop does. Of course, they need billed to.

Next call, someone who used to be a regular customer (and I thought friend) calls and says her granddaughter is getting married next weekend. Her daughter is stopping by to talk about what flowers she needs. Daughter comes in and we go over what she needs in DETAIL. Then she proceeds to tell me that she checked with Kroger and then so and so flower shop and was told this that and the other. Had to work over because she was here. Then she tells me that she will call me in the morning and place her order. No, she has not called.

Had a guy bugging me about our parking lot (see my post in the thread about community events). How many times do I need to say, "no, you cannot have some of our parking spaces."

It just seems that this kind of stuff has been going on and on and on.....

Thanks for not only listening but also providing your own ideas of stress relievers. :)

I think the hardest thing for any of us to do is place a value on our "time off" I think the economy has made us all so hungry for every last dollar that we forget, sometimes we just have to say no, which I know is a very bad word in retail. But somewhere along the line we have to remember that this is a creative business, and if you are just being bugged to death by all the nagging little crap, getting no time off and feeling like the pile of garbage is just getting bigger, than sick employee or not, funeral or not, you have to plan a day off and just do whatever it is that makes you say AHHHHHHHH! woods, water, shopping, hot tub with a great book whatever makes you relax and recharge.....as NIKE says....just do it!

I snuck away yesterday and drove almost 5 hours to Pioneer wholesale for a design show and to buy fall silks. It was wonderful to finally meet Sara (miss her here). It was wonderful to get away and spend 10 hours of quality time with my Mom. She's 74 and has a boyfriend. They are constantly on the go and I am constantly working. He is a widower too and they actually went to school together. Nothing could possibly make me more grateful for this life than seeing my Mom so giddy and truly happy.

I was working 6/7 days a week and finally hired a sat teen. she sells out of the cooler and can make up lovely fresh cuts.

Its amazing how well just having sat/sunday off re charges me.

Tequila and Golf works for me!
Also just getting away like everyone else.Doing some charity work and playing with my grandchildren.Just mediating helps.Even if it's for 5 minutes

This is my very first post after joining this group this morning. I decided this one hit the head. I am tired and discouraged now struggling to keep my numbers up and to SURVIVE. I depend on my past customers and mostly on the kindness of florists who when they get the call or the question (where can i have my flowers preserved??) they take a moment to give them my brochures and phone number/website..... In 2007 I did 230 weddings and funerals (preservation only not fresh) and this year i am only at 120 so this means if i am to make that number I have to do another 100 weddings or so before Jan. A kyack weekend in Maine helps me refresh but knowing that I have new florist friends who will refer customers to me is like a good medicine. We all seem to be hurting!

I think I found it! I decided to start by listening to "The E Myth" that I have on CD. I started to listen to this book months ago but then everything got in the way and, at one point, I didn't want to listen to it.

Anyway, I discovered that my "technician" was the one in charge instead of my "entrepreneur". I am at my most happiest when I am in the "entrepreneur" frame of mind. It is my passion. I realized that I need to stop keeping my mind on all these little things and get back to the big picture. Although I haven't finished the book yet (and I don't agree with everything that the author says) I feel better already!

It is also a tremendous help to vent here and get advise, support and courage from each of you! :)
