and I am bored. I only work 3 days a week. I'm finding that I am feeling a bit stagnant. I want to get my hands on flowers. So what would you recommend to someone to do on their off time? Lots of it!

Have you tried freelancing silks? Due to more home decor stores opening, flower shops aren't carrying the inventory they used too. But...most shops do have at least a few nice arrangements ready to go. As shops are also decreasing their staff, the time to stop and make up a few extra silks is hard to come by. Maybe you could find a few shops looking to add to their inventory. After disussing their needs either of you could provide the materials ~ you provide the labor. Just an idea...

Some of the craft stores also offer silk designs and classes, you could try them.

How about reading about trends in design, magazines, books, Ubloom ....

How about learning about flower varieties, what different colored roses/gerbera are called, names of weird greens. California Cut Flower Commission has a wonderful resource material for learning some of that ....

How about nosing around other flower shops - to get ideas for display, for style, for inspiration ....

How about exploring your area outside, to see what you can "play" with that's free - roadsidia floribunda kind of stuff. Find new greens, interesting buds & pods kind of thing. Get a book about native flora in your area and try to identify stuff you work with, for future reference ....

Make good use of your time "off" to take time to learn something new to your career - it's time well spent for sure, especially if you hope to grow into full time, or something even further. :)

thanks for the suggestion about silks.

Thanks Tracy...you've sparked my brain! :)

Aileen, a challenge for you. If you have a good camera or even a disposable one...
Go out into the woods, parks, rivers, streams, ocean, beach, anywhere actually and take pictures of nature displaying the elements, principles, and techniques of design. You'd be amazed at what Nature has to offer.
BTW, one of the hardest technique to find??? Braiding....
Set yourself with a list of what you're looking for...
Texture is a great one too... with the right lighting...lots can be found.
Color, I love in the fall. Mother Nature provides perfect color harmonies.
Make a notebook with each picture labeled as to the Principle, Element, or Technique of Design...
