Just wondering if any FC members are using or familiar with Mambo for site development? Mambo is a free open source platform.

Our area business group has launched a site www.midlandcircle.org using Mambo, and I am finding it somewhat lacking in functionality, and am wondering if I am missing something....Rich?

I do have Super Administrator access, and can go anywhere and do anything with the thing, but...I'm a bit lost, and that's unusual for me (no wise cracks, yes sometimes I'm a bit off) when it comes to template use.

Maybe I'm trying to compare it to Community Server too much, but there does not seem to be a way to add "multiple posts" for each businesses section. It seems, that you have a page "static content" that you can do anything with, but unlike Community Server you have to change the same page again and again to add content, but there is no differentiation between different date additions and such??!??!?!?

Maybe I can get them to change to CS...but thats not an option right now...anyone got a clue?

mambo

mambo is very hard to work with - even if you are an experienced php coder as it is not well documented

the 'mambo' if a morphed version of another opensource operation... that is actually much more useful

not sure mambo is for any florist unless they hire somebody that is a php programmer to run and set this up for them

Thanks Devine...thats what I'm learning, and I am some what proficient in coding, this program really is NOT for the faint of heart!

Deadwood... I envy you... my favorite little city in the world! Anyone who has never been there, should really make a trip... the Old West still lives in Deadwood, and you can still play 2 deck blackjack!

Mambo and Community Server (the software we use for FloristBlogs.com) really serve two different masters. Mambo is a content management system (CMS). Mambo itself doesn't really do too much--all of its functionality is provided by modules you add to the system. You can do some amazing things with Mambo and other CMSs. Mambo tries to be an all things to all people, so you can also make some craptastic sites, too.

Community Server does three things only--blogs, photo galleries, and forums. This software is very specialized.

For something like a business organization, I think a CMS is probably a better way to go. Each business can have their own page, and security can be very tight to prevent users from editing other pages. The blog and article publishing tools may not be as smooth as Community Server, but they're probably OK.

Yea, I'm finding that out...

Thanks for the review Rich, I was complaining to the "powers that be" that I would preffer a switch to Community Server since I already know it, but I am learning Mambo...sloooooowly ;)

Silly butt heads that put this together, did it without my input, but I am the only one who seems to have a grasp as to how to make it work, sooooooo....I am the one "doing the DOODOO"...

Funny side note... all these folks that run businesses, and claim to know "how to" set up their own stuff ask questions that blow me away... "Whats a browser"? "Back button?" LOL....

Ah well, I set myself up as the only Super Administrator to control access, and try to stop stooopidity....

Will keep you all posted as it progresses...

Off the thread subject a little...but would like to tell you a short story. My folks are in their 80's. We gave them their first computer a couple of years ago so they could email. My Father (87) doesn't like to read anything he considers long. He kept deleting needed software, so I told him I broke the delete key...Second or third years with no accidental deleting, my son visits his grandfather and uses the delete key. My Father spends all evening praising my son (he didn't know what I told my Father about the delete key) for fixing his delete key and now we are back to replacing software again.

Something Mambo does have which CS doesn't is a rich network of additional modules. You can google around for "mambo modules" or "mambo components" and see what else is possible.

The toughest part will be resisting the urge to add something for the sake of adding something cool. Stick to what you need, and only that. But there is some good stuff out there.

Boy..thats an understatement Rich...

Just added a random image generator to the front page (top right) www.midlandcircle.org

The more I play with this platform, the more I like it...easy...

And thanks to RKFdomains.biz for hosting us.
