Type of Business: Manufacturer and supplier of hard goods

About me: I come from a floral family - my grandfather and mother both owned flower shops. I worked as a designer/shop manager for 7 years before moving to the supply side of the business.

I am very active in the floral community in Canada. I like to read the posts to keep in tune with what is going on in our industry and to see if there is anything I can do to help retail florists be more successful.

Welcome to Flower Chat. It is great to see more and more people joining Flower Chat and particularly readers on the supply side. The retail florist side of the business as impacted by the Internet, Phantom Florists, Big Box stores may not be understood by all segments. When a grower sells plants to a charity as a fund raiser they must not realize that they are shooting themselves in the foot. The charities are a huge, I mean gigantic, source of competition in our city. You in the hard goods side, but the impact is the same.

Anyway, Welcome and please spread the word to legitimate retail and wholesale contacts. We have to work together to survive the changes that the world is going through.

Hi Tom,
Thanks for the messsage. I have not heard much about growers selling to charities in Canada but I will certainly ask around. I know local schools have fundraisers at Christmas time with poinsettias and it makes an impact on the already diminishing sales of poinsettias for local florists. It is a difficult market right now. We, as a company are trying to help florists differentiate themselves from mass marketers through new and different ways to upsell arrangements.
Any ideas you have would be welcome!

It was nice to meet you at the round table in Brampton. Hope you were not one of the ones that got sick from that day! Welcome to flower chat
