The new TF directory added something like 450 new shops and removed 1650. (I didn't write down the exact numbers.)

I'm sure some will say they went wire service free and I'll say they went bye bye.

They're down to 18,000 something. I don't think it was that long ago they had 25,000.

This purging is gonna end up being good for us - (he sez hopefully)

I attended the UK Interflora conference and they claim a number that is totally different to our industry stats. Have asked them if we can get some clarification as well as the overall number of shops isn't dropping that much.

JOn...

I think the final number I saw when I was downloading the current version was 12,625 or something...

Just an FYI... (like we care)...

You mean FTD Boss?

I wuz talking Teleflora

I agree with you bloomz its not wire free but rather they have gone out of business and just wait till the next book as I believe there are many ready to pull plug right after Mother's Day!

I wonder if this truly a "good thing" for our industry...imagine having fewer and fewer flower shops around, basically forcing the floral buying public TO the mass merchandisers....

Mikey that depends on rather we had the correct amount of flower shops before the downturn in the economy. I personally think that we have had way to many floral shops for years and far to many doing 150k to 225k with no growth occuring for them. and why would the mass market get the business from closed shops vs other real florist?

Nope, don't think so. The consumer is just directed to the real florist.
People are wising up. I get call after call after call, thankful to find a "real florist" and not just a transferring company. They've been burnt one time too many....

A bunch are still in business in our area - just quit WSs, moved to studios and kept their phone numbers. Got calls from two formerly store-fronted shops yesterday with direct orders.

They've kept their gravy customers and gotten rid of the higher overhead (B&M rent & WS expenses). Both expressed how much happier (and more profitable) they are these days.

Based on what's happening in the UK I personally don't think wire service membership numbers can be viewed as a barometer of what is happening in the traditional florist sector or how stable/successful shops are. In the old days to be without wire/relay membership was usually taken as an indicator the shop wasn't much good and therefore couldn't get membership. Given the large number of non-wire/relay shops in the UK I don't think that is the case any more.
