Extremely impressive!

Thanks! It's hard keeping up, but that's what the hours between 10:00 PM and 3:00 AM are for... Internet/Web Site projects!

Just trying to give our members a chance to compete ~

Congrats!

Must be a different datacentre - I don't see them on the first 5 pages on .com or .ca.

Cathy, were you logged in to Google at the time? I'm wondering if you were getting personalized results?

Ryan

Holy batman

Good job Renee....you guys popped right up on a regular google search for me less than 5 mins ago! Nifty Swifty!

Just noticed that Ilocalflorist.com is only two listings under allied...you guys have been busy!

Different data centers, I suppose. At any rate, The Houston Allied Florists are beating the h*ll out of the rest of us! :>

It's an interesting study in how Google displays different info in different areas and from different datacentres.

Here's the SERPs I see on google.com (not .ca).

Ryan

PS - I went through the first 120 results, couldn't find them.

Was this time well spent? How many people search for "florist" alone? I only ask because I've taken ideas as below as gospel:

Generally, people search for specific information, solutions and products. Therefore, they enter multiple-word search queries. Your targets for ranking should be multiple-word phrases and not single keywords.
...
Targeting the single word “website” would be highly competitive. If you were to get ranked highly for that one word, it would only bring a lot of “junk traffic” that is likely “unqualified”. The multiple two-word phrase “website design” would be less competitive with an enhanced degree of qualification. However, focusing on “Phoenix Website Design” is even less competitive and hones closer to a more desirable lead. Traffic volume would be lower, but conversion rate would be typically higher.

Interesting how it is different for South Texas.....Houston Allied is on the 1st page for us.

Ooooooh - Ryan, how'd you get the page thumbnails to show? Did you also get the refinement suggestions at the bottom of the page like I did?

Your results look the same as what I have typically found on that search.

Rich - Point well taken. I'm guessing most surfers use two-word (or more) queries. I do believe one-word results are telling for overall site strength on a topic, though.

Wondering if my results are skewed by having the G tool bar? .... hmmmmmm.....

Just checked - we have a couple clean machines here (no tool bars) and both display the same results I posted earlier.

That is true, to a point. Targeting keyphrases instead of single keywords is generally a good practice, but it depends on the situation.

For example, 53 of the top 100 keywords searched for today were single terms. Put into context, there were some brand names (Facebook, MySpace, Rihanna) and others were evidence that JB is having a slow day at the office (tits, boobs, nudity, sex).

For most small businesses it's much smarter to target detailed searches as it provides more relevant traffic and visitors that are typically closer to purchasing (the longer the search phrase the closer to buying). The shorter the phrase the less precise the traffic, therefore the higher cost per conversion and greater competition for ranking.

In a situation like the Allied Florists of Houston, they are offering more generic information so it benefits them more to rank well for "florist." Additionally, ranking well for the single keyword will help with ranking for the longer phrase.

The thumbnails come from my BetterSearch Firefox plugin. It's sooo good :)

Yes, I had the refinements, but cropped them out for size.

I have the G-Bar as well, but I've seen no evidence of it messing with rankings when you're not logged in.

Thanks for the Congrats!

Renee and I do work very hard with Allied's website...and in the wee hours also.

RJD is correct about search pharses (florists Houston) vs single word (florists) for target traffic and ROI...

Here are some examples from Allied's logs...
Allied averages about 45,000 hits per month.
search term #google ranking
the single word florist #6 and florists #6 accounted for 11,138 hits during November

additional Allied also ranks...
florists houston #4 (4,470 hits)

florist houston #10 (1,934 hits)

houston florist #8 (2,694 hits)

houston florists #5 (2,385 hits)

florist in houston #6 (1,864 hits)

florists in houston #3 (2,985 hits)

flowers in houston #7 (1,521 hits)

the use of TX vs Texas doesn't seem to matter much (TX 1066 hits vs Texas 1018 hits)

I would say that 95% of the hits that found Allied's website using florist, exited after reading 3 to 4 pages without buying from an Allied florist. Where as, the hits with Houston in the search, most found a local florist.

It surprises me that "florists houston" seems to have that most hits month after month.

food for thought...
