I got the first of what I expect will be many calls today from some company (waiting on email) that is building .Mobi sites for cell phone/PDA shopping.

While this will eventually be a huge thing, I feel it will be a couple years before the technology catches up to the **possible** demand.

Just thought I'd warn folks NOT to jump into something that you probably do not need RIGHT NOW...hold off...take your time...wait and see...

This might be a good place for one of our techno'geeks... Infinite...RJD... to build a .Mobi platform we could all utilize...

I know 800Flowers has spent hundreds of thousands of $$ to develope their .Mobi platform with no ROI as of yet...there was an article in one of the latest Internet Retailer mags...

I suggest you just buy your domain to sit on it just in case it does go big. Cheap insurance.

I did, a couple of them.

In the Webmaster Jam seminar I went to with my son (ie Dad pay), the guy from Apple discussed the code to put in your web code to optimise for the iPhone. This being a techie seminar, almost half of the phones of the 300 attending were iPhones. Now that this subject is brought up, I am going to email him to get him pass his speaking notes.

Working on it, actually.

In case you have the urge to launch a mobile site...

mPoria with GoMobile might be an avenue worth looking into...

Mobi Moniker Auction looks like a deep rabbit hole

The famed .mobi auction where flowers.mobi went for $200,000 is starting to look like a set-up for shilling - at least in part.

Some of the most popular names are already coming back on the market at discount prices.

It also appears that some of the high bidders never paid for their purchases so there's speculation that shillers pushed prices higher with no intent of ever taking possession.

Interesting comment to the blog post:
On the .MOBI stuff, my personal opinion is that this extension was not warranted in the first place … thanks ICANN for the controversy!

Internet extensions were assigned first geographically for the masses, then governmental and institutional.

With .MOBI, ICANN gave way for TECHNOLOGY type of extensions, which is dead wrong IMO, because any geographical extension could map to it (or, infringe upon ?) using the TECHNOLOGY workarounds.
My guess is that mobile speed and delivery technology like the iPhone will make .mobi unneeded.

With newer programming frameworks, you don't need different websites for mobile and regular devices anyway. That's why we passed on .MOBI for us.

It's frustrating when

It's frustrating when all this new technology comes into one's life when the sun is starting to set.

No sure what .mobi is all about
And you suggest "buying your domain"

Sounds to me like the domain we have now for our website will not work.
So what kind of domain would one apply for?

Fine to e-mail me direct if you don't want to publicly answer.

I bought a couple from my hosting company from http://www.1and1.com for $20 a year. Ryan may sell them also - not sure.

You would check for fairviewflorist.mobi, which I see is available.

There is another intangible here - protecting your trade or service marks, which is why I have bought every permutation of mine that I can get my hands on - with the exception I think of the .tv geographic stuff.

.mobi is supposedly tho in its infancy directed at cell phone users Tom, and requires a simpler form of your website, a very bare bones stripped down version such as http://flowers.mobi/ which looks to be owned by an affiliate site

HTH

.mobi is a waste of time. the iphone and Google's new Andriod platform has opened my eyes to the fact that you will surf the web on your phone almost exactly like you do on your computer.

yes, perhaps you may have to deliver different CSS to different browsers (web wonks deal with this everyday...just ask any CSS guy about working with IE7), but people are still going to surf to .com sites.
