Well, I came home yesterday to a frightening situation......I found my Mom almost passed out unconscious on her bed. We tried to rouse her and she was incoherent......My sister and I called 911 and to the hospital in an ambulance she went.

Here is my dilemma - Being a freelancer, I had agreed to help out a florist for the holiday.......Listening to the doctor who last night said that he did not want Mom left by herself for at least 24 hours......I called the cell phone of the florist and left a message as I could not get him to the phone.....

How would you all respond to this.....Have I blown my chances of working in this industry?

Rick, I hope your Mom will be okay. Is your sister able to split time so you can meet your obligations with the shop?

If not, then, Mom before flowers in my world.

Rick, I am so sorry about htis. Mom is definitely before work and any other obligation you agreed to. Right now she needs your focus and attention. Hugs to you!

If they don't understand, would you really want to be working for them anyway...

Stuff happens, I had a miscarriage 2 days before Valentine's day and was distraught about missing work because it is such a busy time and I was relied upon, my Doctor thought I was looney bins, being noticeably more distraught about having to miss work than the reality of what was happening to me and my body, but that is what this industry does to us...

People are very much more important than business, as far as I know everyone at every holiday has made it through even with tragedies, illness and accidents...I wouldn't worry about it too much...

Hope Mom is OK and feeling better now!!!!

this industry does do that don't it!

Christmas before last I woke up on Dec 21. or 22nd and 1/2 my face was droopy.
So I thought I had a stroke, off the to the emergency room I went. Turned out to be bells palsy, which sucked, but wasn't as bad as a stroke. The whole time all I could think of was "I have to get to work, I have to get to work..."

you should have seen how surprised the crew was to see me and my droopy mcdrooperson face, but I worked, droopy face and all.

I think next time I feel I need to go to the emergency room, I probably take the day off!

Yeah, Ricky, Mom comes first. such is life.

So sorry to hear about your mom. Bring them some documention, like paper from the hospital, I am sure they will understand. I know that they should probably take your word for it but, having the proof will show that you are not making up a story like so many employees do to get out of the hard knock days.

Love to you and your mom, Joan

Ricky.....now really, c'mon...you're feeling "guilty" about MOM over "matter"??.
Maybe you HAVE "blown" your chance...you think your MOMMA would given two licks about when you fell outta the tree, and broke your arm??....
'tis ok.....they'll survive (the big bad shop)

Rick, hope your mom will be ok. The shop will survive without you and if they're not understanding, to helll with 'em

Rick sorry to hear about Mom...will keep you in my prayers....Mom comes first...She needs you...you can replace a job...not the Mom...Take care and keep us informed
Becky

hope your mom is feeling better.

for me, customers - work (my customers who pay me and my family's living expenses) comes before family.

Unfortunately, I had a similar incident yesterday. A part time employee called me and told me she was too dizzy to stand up and that her eyes were dilated.

Fortunately for her I can't fire.... her name Anna Mioux, aka wife.

Nine years ago, on this Mother's Day Morning Anna and I were at St Luke's Hospital in West STL county having a baby. All that week, prior to Mother's Day, I told her to stand on her head. ;)

joe

p.s. yea I was at the hospital the whole time.

Well - If we get to the point that we need a caregiver for Mom - then I hope I can count on ya'll if I come calling hat in hand looking for a job........because it is almost impossible to work and to be a caregiver properly.

Mum first every time Rick, i would totally understand an answer phone message. Nothing comes before family... hope she is better soon..
