Hey everybody - just had to share something... I went today to make my first big flower purchase - 9 centerpieces for my parents' surprise 40th anniversary party. And I have to tell you - its kind of nerve wracking from this side of the register - to let go of control. I had originally planned to just use silks and glass that we have here and do it myself. But then, I have these florist friends who have taught me the benefit of letting a professional do it! So I went to a florist who was one of my dad's first customers over 30 years ago. Good man, good shop. And I am trusting him and leaving it in his hands. But it is KILLING me because I am such a control freak!

So anyway, just had to tell SOMEBODY. :) Now you can know how your customers feel when they come to you!

Sarah,
I'm curious to hear more about your experience since you can bring a fresh perspective to the buying process.
Obviously you trust this shop to do a good job; how was the consultation; what was great or bugged you; did you suffer from sticker shock?
Please elaborate.
Thanks
Emily

Well, I am kind of a hybrid - I am more familiar with flowers than the average consumer, yet I am not a designer. So I am not sure I am the best to give advice...But...

First, I don't even know what the price is going to be! He said he would call me next week and let me know. So there is no sticker shock yet. I am expecting it to be expensive, but flowers are a huge deal in our family, more so than most, so I have just accepted that. I cut out the appetizer on the dinner so that I could afford flowers! I also know that he will not cheat me, just because I know how he does business and their reputation as a shop.

My situation was a little hard too because I had to use daisies. They were my mom's wedding flowers. But they don't make the most exciting event flowers. And I couldn't find examples of even anything I really wanted.

What was good is that he made size and quantity suggestions based on the table sizing that the restaurant will be using. He was honest when one of my suggestions did not sound like a good idea. He asked very specific color questions. He was very detailed in getting the information about when I wanted them delivered, etc.

I just have one beef with the majority of the florists in our area that doesn't really apply to a lot of FCers. I want pictures!! Either online, or in a book in the shop. I go on all of the websites of florists in our area, even the really high end event florists that do the celebrity events in town - and all I see are cookie cutter TF and FTD images. I wish there were more portfolios of past events etc. that I could say, oh, I like this look but I don't like that one. Even if you have a TF/FTD website - add on a portfolio of your customer work!!

Can I just throw out one other suggestion - remember that your vendors are possible customers too. I had a plethora of choices of florists I could choose. I did not choose the closest to the venue, I did not choose the one with the biggest advertising. I did not choose the cheapest nor the fanciest. I chose the one who has been around for a long time, and who treats us decently, and who I know has a good business ethic, and who has a pretty shop! (Actually I had a couple of options and it was really hard to decide.) But if a florist calls us up and screams at me... guess what? Shes not getting my business when the time comes.

I'll keep you posted with the sticker shock answer when I get the sticker. And I'll post pics of the final product when it is done. We'll see if the vision in my head got translated or not!!

Well, just wanted to tell you all that you are so right about hiring a professional. The florist called today and left a message with one of my coworkers to call me. I never got the message until 5, and I couldn't get thru on his phone line. So I stopped in his shop on my way home. He showed me what he is going to do for the final design. SO MUCH BETTER THAN ANYTHING I COULD HAVE DREMPT UP!! I have totally learned my lesson now. DIY is removed from my vocabulary for life.

Sarah you were wise to choose a florist who you trusted based on his stability within the retail community. You don't last for that length of time because your not good at what you do. The secret is in not becoming complacent with your work.

When we added the flower shop to our existing gift/gourmet business we knew we had to rise above the others. We continue to stay concious of our work. I'm saying this because of something that happened this afternoon. We had finally found the time to practice Phil's weaving and braiding techniques. While we were doing this a Mom and her daughter came in the store. They were looking around and watching us. I showed them what we were learning. The Mom said, I received a flower arrangement and gift certificate from you yesterday. I want you to know the arrangement was outstanding and I can tell by watching you that you really care about your work. Ahhh music to our ears! She went on to compare our arrangement to other shops, but I won't bore you with that !!

So you did good by going to a trusted florist. There is a huge difference between professional design and the Kathy Ireland video. Now be sure to take pictures and share them with us.

Well, here is a picture. Its not a real good one. I thought I took a better picture than I did. This in no way does justice to how pretty the flowers are... Guess I need to work on my photography skills. Actually, I was so nervous and distracted that I have basically no good pictures from the party. So next time, I hire a photographer too!
