Mom had both knees replaced 13 1/2 and 14 years ago. Was told they'd last 10-15 years so no surprise. She had pain and her doc said a part came loose and they don't make replacement parts - LOL. So Aug. 9th she had the whole knee replaced again. She's doing great! They have this machine now she uses at home two hours every morning and two hours every night that bends her knee. Started at 85 degree bend and goal was 110. She just hit 110 yesterday. Go mom!!!

She'll be back up here at work the day after Labor Day. She can't wait - hard to keep her down. I sent ribbon and enclosure cards to her via Neal today so she can make bows and stamp cards. She can anaswer the phones and design with Neal and I gophering for her most of the time. She's getting around so well though - it won't be long and she'll be getting everything herself.

Neal and I are running things alone and it's been ok. When Neal is gone on deliveries my biggest fear is having the phone ring while I am waiting on someone at the counter or vise versa. That only happened twice so far and it worked out fine - no one felt slighted. We have completely rearranged the design room and it is so much more efficient and so clean and organized. Mom is going to love it! We made the diagram almost a year ago.

Mom will be 84 in October. She just keeps going and going. Neal calls her the energizer bunny.

patty.......tell your mom hey from all here.........84 !!!!!??????? holy hanna !
The flowers really DO keep us young yes?
Glad all is working out aok.
Best wishes,
jeannie

What great news that your mom is doing so well! About 9 weeks ago, my mom had her knee replaced, and she has shocked everyone at how well she has done. She's 85, and she has become increasingly feeble since Dad died a little over a year ago. Tell your mom that we're all thinking of her, and we admire her strength and spunk!

get well soon

patti,
tell clare that i asked about her. she is one remarkable lady. remember i knew her back in the "buttons and beads" days.
she is a great role model to all that meet her...as she never allowed age to be the reason as to why she couldn't do something.
in florist years....she is soon to be approaching middle age.
have a great holiday weekend.

Patti - get well wishes for your mom! Hope I'm that active in my later years!

As for being alone with a customer when the phone rings - this happens to me in our tiny shop. I tell the phone person I'm just finishing up with a client at the counter and would they mind if I called them back in 5 minutes. Never ever had a problem or complaint, and they appreciate not being on hold.

Hey Patti,

Glad to hear your mom is doing well! My dad had his partial knee replacment (done 2 years ago) redone with a total replacement mid June this year). He is finally doing better (can't tolerate pain meds).

My Mom is chomping to come into work for a break :) She works during the winter at Harriets. Ruskin FL and for me in the summer.

As for the phone and counter customers. Most are very accommodating about the small interruptions. Those in a hurry, you do your best. After all, most other retail stores are operating short staffed these days. (how many check stands are open at the grocery store - more are closed than open) A friendly greeting and a "be with you in a minute" goes along way.

Hey! I just hit 110 today too!

But mine's with my old knee - you Mom must really be a peach!

Mom fell Monday and broke the kneecap of the same knee that had been replaced. The fact that she had had the knee replaced about 2 months ago made the kneecap surgery much more serious. She will never have much mobility in that knee again, and she is facing months of rehab in a rehab facility..

Tell your mom to do what those therapists tell her. If Mom had listened to her therapists instead of doing everything her way, she might not have fallen. The quickest "recovery" just might not be the best.

By Patty's account, sounds like her mom is stubborn enough to do things her own way as well!!
It's a roll of the dice, when you have major limb joints "replaced" at the advanced age that some people have them done!!
The great thing IS, as Bill alluded to, that age has so little impact these days, and that older people are living LONGER, with greater vitality, and fantastic role models for those of us that a generation behind them.
MANY of us have parents that are in their eighties, still going strong, STILL leading by example, and STILL showing us that we have much to learn & appreciate, and believe me, I wanna be JUST LIKE THEM!!
