AS of this morning, I found out we will be doing a party for our owner on Sept. 19th. The party will be held in his airplane hangar (very large space and tall). He will have a bunch of his classic cars parked around the perimeter of the inside of the hangar and one whole side will have the big door open to the outside.

It's not a sit down but there will be approx. 12 60" round tables for seating and several buffet and dessert tables that will need flowers.

They're having an old plane land part way through the party and a couple of women in 50's airline attendant attire will get off and serve champagne.

The linens are going to be all white with black overlays and some silver touches.

We obviously need to go tall on the tables-but stable-there could be some strong breezes coming in. I'm thinking a clean look in more primary colors-reds for sure, maybe some blues and possibly yellows. Most of the cars are red, black, white, blue, and a couple are burgundy and brown. I'm leaning towards a 40's or 50's vibe with chrome and glass.

I don't have a budget other than "make it nice". I do, however, have a short time to get everything together-it's only a week and a half away.

Any ideas would be appreciated!!

sounds like a 50's jet set look to me.... still thinking about design and floral. i'll get back to you if i think of anything. sounds like fun, whatever you do!

a fun look would be a low arrangement with a handful of 5 ft. ting ting, going straight up. then incorporate some model balsa wood glider planes, high in the ting ting

Large glass cylinders with a smaller mercury glass cylinder secured in center of large cylinder to replicate exhaust pipes with a modern
short design on the top or go a step further & add foggers at top for "exhaust".

To create area of interest where open door will be (assuming there's room), spraypaint wire easels chrome or metallic silver and suspend
gliders from top point of easel. Or go for a more detailed look & cover gliders with small petals.

For the dessert table, a really cool vintage car made of flowers.
The buffet table, a vintage looking plane made of flowers sitting at an angle pointing to the start of the buffet line.

Not sure if this would go with it, but would be fun.. incorporate orchids... have the airline attendants wear orchids in
their hair or a corsage. Maybe the attendants could give out leis to the guests after they land. Strands of orchids to
edge the dessert or buffet table. (Thinking white orchids.)

Daytime event? Nighttime event? Cocktail attire? Casual?

If it's not a 'sit down' event, I'd go low so people can converse and mingle. Then do your tall statements on the buffets and at the entry. We do flowers for a classic car museum and most of the time, folks want low looks - especially if it's for a "business" event.

Definitely red and chrome silvers to pick up on the classic car colors and features - but not too much bling or it will go Vegas. If you want to use other colors, IMO monochromatic designs (all yellow, all blue, all red, etc...) read really well.

Lighting is soooo important for nighttime. Do you have uplights (like these) to put under the centerpieces? Or Submersible lights? They're great to add light without being too flashy. COD wholesale (linked in the previous sentence) has great prices and can deliver fast. Ask for Don.

Good luck. Sounds like fun. :)

Thanks for the suggestions! Definitely giving me ideas. I just need to get through the wedding show we're doing tomorrow first and then I can focus more. I just wish I had more time!

The event is from 4-8 pm. The large hangar door that will be open faces west and sunset is at about 7:00 pm that night. So...I anticipate there will be ample daylight for the majority of the evening-unless it's cloudy.

It's casual, but casual is subjective for this group :)

Cathy, I like the idea of low for the tables, but the hangar is so huge I'm afraid they wouldn't have much presence as the guests enter the building. I'm thinking of half tall and half low. Thanks for the link.

The buffet is going to be set up in the center with a "box" made of tables and one square table in the center where will I have a large, tall piece. I will also do some pieces on the two bars. The dessert table will have a chocolate fountain as it's centerpiece so I'll most likely just use some floral garnishes.

Thanks again...and keep the ideas coming!

Sandy,

Is there any possibility of suspending your designs? That's the first thing that occurred to me. I'm thinking a rope with conduit or PVC painted silver. Just one tube coming straight down over the table like you would see in a 50's era home as a chandelier, flowers in the bowl of the "chandelier" (I'm thinking a silver design tray). Modern and clean. Definitely monochromatic.

That's a great idea Linda! Not sure we can pull that off, but I like it! We have come up with the plan to incorporate car parts into the designs, or, more accurately, use the car part as the focal of the design. Picture a real tailpipe (similar to meritasflowers suggestion) with a bunch of gerbs shooting out of it? Or a low design with two back to back hub caps standing up in the center of it. I'm off to the auto salvage yard tomorrow in search of hub caps, steering wheels, hood ornaments, tail pipes, and anything else that catches my eye!
