Rant!!! Had family member come in for sympathy flowers this morning and wanted to take the books home to her mother who is disabled for the family to look at. Told her that I would need to know what they would like before 1:00 to get flowers from wholesaler in the a.m. Asked her to pick out what they would like, either call me to find out availability or bring back their wishes and I would call the wholesaler.
1:00 NO show
2:00 NO show
3:20 comes in says "thanks for the use of the books" and leaves.............

Never, ever again will those books leave this shop.......

learned that one here too. Especially when they come back with damage.

Ouch!

Well, at least you got them back. I had a brand new JH sympathy book that I had just finished pricing. It got *lost* at the funeral home. $50 gone and no order. I also wonder just how many pictures got taken on a smart phone while your book was gone visiting.....much easier to compare prices on line that way.

It makes it very difficult to want to help people in special instances ~ I got to the point where I just will not let the books out of my sight. Some people make it difficult to stick to your guns, especially when it's such a plausible excuse but I just finally had to say "No, I'm sorry. It's an ironclad policy now because of too many incidents." They will try to wheedle sometimes but most people understand. Those that don't have to live with it.

A deposit could be held of 20-30 dollars, that amount would be put toward order when book returned. O, for the love of retail. Instances like this will probably become more n more common w people showcasing stores.

I think the deposit idea is a great idea....I would just make the deposit the replacement cost of the book. If they want to take it that bad, they will pay the deposit.....

of the 5 children and 8 grandchildren 10 are all my customers (or have been - even the widow of the deceased) and knowing the widow could not leave her home without distress, I allowed them to take the books. One was priced, one was not...... my bad.. never should have given them the priced book so they could price shop...... I stopped it with wedding pics/books many years ago.... now the same with sympathy books.. Should the need arise again, I shall book an appointment at the home before I let those books leave my possession.

With today's technology, there is no need for anyone to EVER take your books! It seems like everytime we go against one of our policies, it bites us in the butt.

Had one lady who is a great customer but a great procrastinator too. Called me and talked for almost an hour about her sister and everything her sister did to her during their mother's funeral. She had originally called to order flowers for her sister but talked herself out of it. So she calls back hours later and wants something delivered to her sister. Even though it was almost closing time, we did it for her. She said if her sister isn't home to leave it on her porch. Sure enough, sister calls the next day and wants another arrangement because her flowers were frozen. She didn't get home until almost 11pm. So 1. we usually don't take deliveries that have to be taken after work because of the horrible traffice we have here. 2. we don't leave things. We broke our own rules and had to provide her with another arrangement. You see the recepient is a customer of ours also!!

It's the first time this has happened here... a daughter of a deceased brought in the books (priced) from the funeral home and asked if we could match their prices. Of course we could. But the prices in the funeral home book were very reasonable - I had always thought they'd be higher to allow for commissions to the florist. I was surprised the funeral home let her take the books.
