In answering a post by Eric S on the other board regarding a John Henry Company sympathy book, it got me going in another direction on the post that I would like to share/get feedback from the Flower Chat Community;

I have been in contact with JHC on their new everyday book (in the starting design stage now, to be issued in 2006) on my comments regarding what I think the new book should include and what I did not like about the last everyday book....and now they have added me to that book's advisory committee (that is what happens when you voice an opinion). I would appreciate getting some feedback from other florists on what they liked/did not like about the last JHC Everyday Book and what comments/suggestions you would like to offer JHC for the new book before it gets too far in the design stage.

One of the suggestions that I had alread submitted is for them to engage in a copy writer to come up with the catch/clever descriptions needed to go with our website images. Another is having all of the images in natural setting like the wire service images with an option to use the image with a white background...for some shops that prefer it that way. (In talking to them on this one, not sure if their budget will allow this one....how strongly do florists feel about this?) One other suggestion that I had JHC was to find a young computer science graduate and have them take the typical JHC workbook and put it on CD with flower and softgood database that has the items priced with the option to go in and change the data base in the flower/hardgood costs and the mark up in labor and materials. I remember an old FTD Dos version that broke down the catagories (wedding, sympathy, everyday, etc) and you could apply a different markup on each catagory. I could go on, but I would like to here other florist comments and ideas.

Thanks, Clay.

Sounds like you have a handle on it pretty well. The white background option is a must for sure.

Keep them all in generic containers is another plus I can think of, but I have not seen the old one so maybe they already do that.

Yes or at least not so bold...detracts from the actual item.great for print but not for web

Like that idea

Would like them to have a web location.Could be password protected so you could send the order using their image and have a reference point for a rec'ving florist to view it if they had a question about the design...we have been working with them on 2 custom catalogs....great pricing..but would even be greater if all of us participated...can you imagine! AND NO ws IMAGES...YEAH!
Good luck on helping them out!

JHC Everyday Book

what's the up-date on this?? does anyone know?
I was talking to Bob Shockey on Monday about something else and I had asked him that very question. After one year of being put on the back burner for the Prom Book, and another year due to budget....he said it was actually on his desk to resubmit to the Head Honchos this week. Keep your fingers crossed.
