Afloral.com to Release New Floral Social Website

Afloral.com is pleased to announce the launch of their new social networking community, AfloralConnect.com. This new website provides a wide variety of floral resources and knowledge, as well as allowing users to "connect" with others throughout the country that have a shared interest for flowers.
AfloralConnect.com's purpose is to offer an online community in which the user can talk with florists, designers, hobbyists, and other flower enthusiasts to share ideas and even ask questions. Users can view the list of upcoming bridal or floral events near them and submit photos of their arrangements and wedding ideas. Check out the weekly updated blog to enjoy articles written on various topics including floral retail, bridal tips, and many more, as well as posts with photos and fun video clips. If you need to find a step-by-step guide to making a new and unique arrangement or bouquet, AfloralConnect.com is there to provide different floral how-to's.
Jenifer Williams, a frequent Afloral.com customer states, "I am looking forward to AfloralConnect.com and all the information they have to offer. As a returning customer to Afloral.com, I am extremely happy and excited for them and their new website."
So far, the site is big on promoting Afloral.com's silks and hardgoods (plus ads from other non-floral commercial sites), and low on content. Definitely for DIYers. No fresh flowers vendors - yet.

There's one section with requests for "Florists and business owners (to) post beginning tips and advice here".

The idea of a floral social site is a good one, but with so much of the content created to promote sales of their own products, the users will likely be their own customers.

At any rate, it's a site worth watching.

Does anyone see potential benefit to adding an open access social network aspect to FlowerChat? It's something I've considered for a long time but I can't persuade myself in either direction.

I wonder, in the very slight chance that this site takes off, how long it will talk 800-TFTD to buy up all the banner ads and turn it into a big corporate social circle-jerk-network, just as Microsoft has done with buying all the Facebook ad space ($240mil) for the next 5 years..

Ryan, Flowerchat already is a "social network"...why mess with success?

Thanks for that ...

Sometimes I wonder if FlowerChat could affect more change if we were able to interact more with the consumer. It might be a pipe dream, but I've often thought about having FC as a consumer resource for ideas, buying guides, reviews, even an RFQ system for event work, etc.

I wonder about the possibility of success for bringing FC in contact with the public - of course, the existing forums would remain off-limits!

I've thought about this before also - with all the smart florists around here, it could be a real platform for dialogue between the independent shop and consumers - ordering advice, keeping it local, flower care info ....
Drawbacks, how to professionally and publically deal with a DIYer who comes aboard looking for detailed how-to info; the whole home based issues re-hashed... I don't how one could mediate the two areas successfully.

Yeah Kathy I agree. Afloral has done a poor job representing what a social network is. I see no social network at Afloral, I see a tacky website trying to pawn their goods. Pitiful.

Ryan I think a lot of people here aren't sure of what a social network is to its full extent. I think what you have created here is a social network, a @@@@ good one, with the bells and whsitles, but not in the same GUI format. Your work here is a Social network web 1.0 and could be updated to a web 2.0 version integrating Google new Open Social (which they just released) with one of the many white labeled social networks out there. Here is a crappy sandbox version of a social web2.0 network I worked on awhile back. Please forgive the lack of design and crappy style, it's just my test site, my real site is still undercover. ;) http://webcamflowers.com/ (I told you it was ugly, but I was working on 'social' type features, the design comes later. :)

So I have been working on this 2.0 version of a floral community and came to the conclusion.. naaa. Why? No offense, but this industry is filled with professionals who say, when asked what their email address is, "Isn't that the new Tom Hanks movie"? /sigh - Now you guys reading this, which = less than 1% of the florists out there are up with the times, I am talking about the rest. I need more eyeballs than this industry and this target market, us, is just too small and those of us can rarely agree that an orange is really an apple. ;)

So my top secret project is no competition to flowerchat. But I can tell you I am working on everything I am passionate about. Fine Flowers, chocolate, wine, coffee and food.(A trading up type social network) This idea will have enough eyeballs. But the flowers part of the social network will be invite only and for florist who sees our industry more as an art and not a commodity. Sorry JB, I love bro, but you're not getting in. :) I have always been passionate about helping the boutique type florist, because we, the underdogs, have to battle some of you, who make a mockery of our art by selling it out as a commodity. /ducks
With that said I still respect "those type" of florists in many other ways, I just take the commodity thing personal. Hell I love sitting down with JB , having a beer and talking shop, it's exciting! and I learn so much from him too. Me and JB are total opposites when it comes to floral philosophy, but like old Nam buddies when it comes to everything else.

Anywho... if anyone wants to know more about creating a social network, I would help you in any way I can... unless it's for FTD. /kicks JB in the ovaries and runs

Kathy, again, great post, this community owes you so much, I hope they know that. Ryan, you've done an awesome job here with your team, updating your site to a web 2.0 social network would look cooler, be up to date, your florist return rate would go up and it would look more organized. If you have not seen this yet Ryan, you should: http://code.google.com/apis/opensocial/ - It's apart of the future of your community and how you can stay in the lead, compared to these cheap knock offs like afloral who obviously have a hidden agenda for sales, not helping florists.

I checked this forum because a friend here sent me the link, I'll be back in 3 months or so :) - I do receive my PMs via email if you need to call me names or ask a question.

Daz,

Thanks for the info. I'm well aware of Google's Open Social API, but I'm not sure if it will be an exact fit. I'm waiting on some development info from Jelsoft as they are developing "social" aspects for vBulletin. They are very tight-lipped about what is coming, and the timeline :)

I think FC is moving towards Web 2.0 - don't you see the gradients and rounded edges in the new design? <jokes> Besides, we've had AJAX features for ages.

A requirement for any social tool additions would be integration with vBulletin. I'm committed to staying on a stable, well supported and consistently developed platform that is enough of an industry standard to encourage abundant plug-in and hack development.

I will tip my hat a bit and say I've been playing with Pligg - mostly for another project, but Pligg does have vB integration, so that's an option.

I think adding a consumer area to FC *could* be a good idea, as long as we don;'t tell anyone they are stooooopid....;)

And if we maintain decorum amongst ourselves in the "public" areas :argue:

I wonder how much real information we would impart to the consumer other than "Check with a local florist in your city".... but we could direct consumers to local florists. It could be a big benefit and change to the online sellers as the word has spread amongst florists, to get it spreading amongst consumers....

Hmmmm......

Hmmmm......
Then of course, there's the dilemma of stooooooopid people finding their way in - re:Memo or others with their old time grudges .....

Does anyone have examples of real consumer/professional forums that are more socially mixed? I can only think of The Knot offhand, and it's mostly consumers with some pros who comment occasionally ....

CHR and I kicked around the idea of a Digg-like site (using the DotNetKicks platform) a few months ago. I think there's some potential, small but very specialized. Just one more things to occupy time I don't have.

RJD,

If you're interested in collaborating on a social-type addition for FC, we'd be glad of the assistance & your expertise - and the shared management load would be easier for everyone :)

Ryan

I think it should be separate from FC, because FC has no direct value to consumers (since it's a private forum). If this were to be a collaborative effort, it might be better under the Real Florists moniker.

One thing for sure, it will be a haven for spammers, so the admin group will have to stay on top of the submissions. But, it could very well grow into a valuable and central location for flower lovers, and the media.
