Hi, I am a new member and I just joined march 26, 2008. I am located in Maryland, USA and I am a home based florist and very very new to the whole floral business. I am kind learning through trial and error. I came into this business because I am excited about flowers. I am constantly buying how to floral books in my quest to continue to improve my skills. I forward to learning and contributing to this community.Thanks.:smoke

I think I may have to revise my new member introduction after having read the rules of membership. I am a registered business, www.klassy-kreations.com However, I primarily handle silk florals for weddings from my home. The only formal floral education I have is from my local community college. However, I was not satisfied with it so I am currently saving money to attend long distance program at the floral design institute to learn fresh flowers. Their curriculum seems to be more inclusive compared to what is offered at my local community college. Why flowers? There's just something about flowers that makes eager to learn. I really wish I can explain it. I wish I could do it full time however, due to financial responsibility, I have to maintain my office full time job and run business when I return home. I know that I am unable to offer any knowledge to this community but I hope my membership will still be approved. This is not a hobby for me, I really would love to learn about floral design, which is the reason I am trying to attend FDI in order to learn the fundamentals correctly. I am hoping with the beginners classes in fresh floral designs, my business will be able to generate more income, so that I can transitioned to my business full time. Hence I am re-working my business plan. Having said this, please please, please do not kick me out. If my ideas are green or unrealistic, I am open to suggestions. Thank you for your attention.

Sorry everyone. Even if I am not granted full membership, can a section be created in this forum for students? I am sure there are quite a number of floral design students like myself who could possibly learn from each other and possibly maybe the experienced members of this chat room can provide guidance to the students? This is really a good community. okay I am just trying to plead my case. thanks everyone.

KK, -
welcome :)
Your second intro was much more informative, thank you.

Some other resources, where you may be able to find some information to prepare you for working with fresh flowers:
Society of American Florists www.safnow.org
American Instutite of Floral Design www.aifd.org

Some publications that may help you as well:
Flowers& magazine
Florists Review Magazine
Bride & Bloom
Profil

There are tremendous differences between working with fresh and silk flowers, and the skills needed for each. I hope you'll keep trying to learn!

Hi KK. Thank you for tendering such a well written and informative second intro. While this may not be the place for you just yet, I'm sure it will be in time. Tracy gave you great info and I'm certain you will continue to learn and grow... and potentially become a member of this great site.

Kind regards.
