About Me: hummm...

Hello!
I'll just start from the beginning... I decided a few years ago that I really did hate my office job! Looking into floristry just made sense; I have always loved flowers and I'm very crafty not to mention my fiance is a Horticulturalist and it is something we can share. I quit my office job and went from shop to shop begging for a job unlicensed and with no experience, no one would give me the time of day! Finally I found a family owned shop in the area who offered me a position but it was an absolutely insane pay cut and I was only working 1 to 2 days a week. For a year and a half I scrubbed buckets and mopped the floor while learning a little floral lesson when ever possible. I had learned the POS & wire system and so when our shop manager quit and the owner was out on maternity leave I became manager. I have been working in the industry for 3 years now and I have been state licensed for 2 years. I am planning to open my own shop (here in New Orleans) by the end of this year. I was so glad to find this forum as at times floral design can seem like a dying art. If you've managed to read through all of this, thanks for the time!

Thank you all for the warm welcome! It's so nice to have everyone be so supportive and informative. As for my paycut, I am now back up to my previous wage... although I expect to start pinching pennies after the opening.
Again, thanks! You guys rock.:yourock:

Oh! ... one thing I forgot to ask, how does the voting into membership thing work? Is there a certain number of votes required and how long will it take to get in or get the boot?

You're in. :) Welcome to this great place.

Is your shop still recovering from the aftermath of Katrina or were you spared?

Actually I worked for another shop when Katrina hit and as of now the nearest shop in my area (which had been there for ages) is not coming back and so I am in the process of getting things together to open up shop by the end of the year. I live in Lakeview, which was devastated by Katrina, however we are coming back very strong and new business is popping up everywhere. This area is pretty much a sure bet and it's also nice that my shop location is one block away from my home.

It's a shame that so many of our old flower shops did not come back after Katrina but it has opened the market for a number of new shops that are bringing fresh, modern designs mainstream in this area. This seemed to be something we have fallen behind on (most people here are very old fashioned).

Welcome, glad to hear Lakeview is coming back, it would be a shame to have lost such a historic district of New Orleans.

Also good to have a fellow Louisianan on this board.
