Hi there,
I'm a florist's daughter and am planning to leave the teaching profession and start a small flower shop...with mom's help. Just thought that getting into the chats here might help with ideas and info!

Welcome to the FlowerChat community....

There's lots of information here...

Enjoy your visit...

Welcome Sophie. :)

Mark is right, this place is like an encyclopedia of floral and related business information.

If you have specific questions, post them in the shop forum and people will respond.

You've made a wise choice joining the Flowerchat community.

Welcome...yes you have made a wise choice joining. You won't regret it. Very knowledgeable crowd here, don't hesitate to ask anything. Too much time can be spent here however so be careful of that. Find that balance. Share and learn much!
I have a special place in my heart for Australians. Off topic, but have you heard of Sick Puppies? - Shimon Moore, Emma Anzai, Mark Goodwin? I just love love love them and they are originally from Sydney.

Just have to ask... Why on earth would you ever leave the teaching profession to go into floral. Do you really want to go from working 180 days a year to 365? Are you ready to give up long weekend off and summer vacations that last 10 weeks? Do you really want to give up weekends off? Do you really want to work extra hard at every holiday and abandon holiday traditions, like enjoying shopping, cooking, baking and relaxing? Are you ready to work 2x as hard for yourself as you do at your current job, and receive only the praise you give yourself?
Are you ready to be the cleaning lady, the counselor, the book keeper, the risk taker, the bill payer, the creative thinker, the problem solver?

If you are welcome to the club!

Joan, 25 years in this and I am still not sure I want that and have already been owning for 4.5 years...and I knew what I was getting myself into..Good luck, you'll either love it, hate it or learn to deal with it all.

OK, Soophiejs,
What exactly is it that is driving you to be a flower shop owner? Why not a flower shop designer, or shop keeper?, or shop manager?
What skiill sets do you bring to the table to make you think you will be successful as a business owner?
Have you ever worked in retail, or in a flower shop for one full year, so that you get a sense of the rhythem of the cash flow in a flower shop?
And if you still feel like this is the right calling for you, I've been hired many times to help start ups, and I would be happy to come on down, as they say.
Just give me a call. I think I may have to bring a few other friends, if the response to this thread is any indication!
