I am going on a 3 day visit to New York City in less than 2 weeks with my best friend. I have never been there before, so I am very excited. Dana has only been there for a 3 hour stop over. We are staying in Times Square, but do not want to make the traditional tourist stops. We hope to discover some unique and artsy nooks and crannies. Does anyone have any suggestions for us??

New York is great! Don't cheat yourself out of the "traditional tourist stops", there's a reason everyone wants to see them!
There are interesting and artsy things anywhere you turn, so you won't have trouble finding unique and interesting places.
Hope you have a great time!

Don't miss going to the top of the Empire State building.
You'll be staying in the Times Square area, so I don't have to tell you to visit it.
If you can, take a ride in the Staten Island ferry. It is free (about the only thing in New York) and it will provide you with some of the best views of the Statue of Liberty and the city you can have at any price.
Take a walk along Fifth Avenue from 59th to 42nd St. Visit St. Patrick's cathedral and the New York Public library on 42nd and 5th. You might also want to check out Tiffany, Cartier, Saks, Lord & Taylor and many of the other shops along 5th Avenue. If you can get tickets, go see the Christmas show at Radio City though it might not be playing when you are here. If you can, go see a Broadway show.
There is sooooo much to see that 3 days is not nearly enough.
My favorite shop in the city, especially during Christmas time, is Gramercy Park Florist. I think they are located around 23rd St and 3rd Avenue. Their Christmas decorations are incredible.
It is a great city. Have fun!

I might suggest the following florist:
Surroundings, Renny Reynolds, Rinaldo Maia...lots to choose from.

Go see Takashiayma (sp) Department store, Macy's chirstmas department for the ribbon treatment on trees

As many broadway shows as you can do in 3 days, Momma Mia, Phantom, Equis,Lion King theyare all good! Gypsy is great with PAtti LuPone.

It is a great place! Stay up forever, you can sleep when you get home!

If you are "Artsy" type, you might like MOMA.

I used to live in Manhattan. I've been to MOMA a couple of times, dragged by my wife and her friends. I find it to be one of the most incredibly boring places (I'm not an artsy type). I remember seeing a "painting" that's basically nothing in there (just white). I looked at the title and it said "Nothing." I thought I can do this "painting", too. Art is very mysterious to me.

There's a famous botanical garden in Brooklyn, too. This one is my favorite.

NYC? WOW! It's so huge.

Anyone else have any favorite places in New York City? Favorite flower shops, restaurants, etc., etc....?

Honestly Nancy, NYC is so huge, you really need to take a Double Decker Bus Tour.

This company specializes in giving you a much better taste for the BIG APPLE and while leaving all the driving to them.

Here's a link to their SUPER NEW YORK TOUR.

http://www.destination-store.com/tour/new+york/supernewyorktour/

Their buses leave from the Times Square/Broadway district, so it's a walk to, for you.

They also offer a Night Tour to SO HO and Little Italy, The Empire State Building, and Greenwich Village, which is probably going to meet your needs.

As to BROADWAY, here's a link for the current discounts which are being offered for the Theatre District. You will be able to save lots of bucks by using this site.

http://www.seasonofsavings.com/

Click on SAVINGS ON BROADWAY, pick a show, and use the discount code. Their savings range from 33% to 55%.

Here's another link for SAME DAY shows, but you have to wait on line and you might not be able to get tickets for the show you want, although the savings can be as high as 50%.

As to Restaurants? All depends upon your likes of cusine and price range. Let me know what you like and the $$$$?

One of my favorite Steak Houses is Gallaghers in the Theatre District at 52nd Street and Broadway, also a walk to, for you. Lunch or Dinner, or just a few drinks at their bar. They make the best HOMEMADE POTATO CHIPS I've ever tasted.

Any other questions, just ask?

I was just there in August. We had a group, so I didn't get to do 2 of the musts on my list (well, now I have a reason to go back).

One of the places I wanted to go very badly was Century 21 http://www.c21stores.com/#/home/ it is an off price designer department store.

I missed MOMA, and am still kind of mad about that. It was the museum I most wanted to go to.

We took a bicycle tour of Central park that was great!!! And we also bought the 48 hour pass for the double decker tour bus, which was cheaper than taking cabs all over.

Have a GREAT TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You must go to SoHo, Greenwich village and Little Italy. I always go back to those. Just reinforcing that Toto knows what he is talking about. Make sure you get an Ice Cream from one of the parlors in Little Italy. Soho and Greenwich are the places if your artsy fartsy, as I am.

Have a splendid time!

Where in Times Square are you staying?

Two More Great Food Venues!

One Restaurant I would also recommend to you, would be The View Restaurant and Lounge located at the top of the New York Marriott Marquis. That's another WALK TO for you since it's also located at 1535 Broadway and 46th Street.

It's New York City's only REVOLVING ROOF TOP restaurant with spectacular views of Times Square and the rest of the BIG APPLE.

Should you get down to Little Italy, New York City's CHINATOWN is also just a walk to, from there. Be sure to visit the BUDIST TEMPLE which is FREE and open to the public.

And for some good eats, you might want to try Hop Kee at 21 Mott St.

When picking a good restaurant in any China Towns, I just look inside and when I see the most Chinese People eating there, that's the one I know, is probably the best.

Here's a few others like the Arang Korean Buffet.

Or a really Great ALL YOU CAN EAT Seafood Japanese Sushi Buffet.

Thank you so much everyone for your suggestions for NYC. I took them with me for us to reference as we made choices each day. We had such a great time!!! I loved New York City and didn't really expect to like it as much as I did.

Here is what we did. We liked staying in Times Square because it allowed us to experience it without having to make a point of going there. It was such a colorful view out our window every day. It was amazing how alive and awake it always was.

We spent most of our time in Greenwich Village and Soho. Every day we just wandered about to see what we found. I loved Central Park and had no idea it was so wooded and varied...and safe.

We ate at Gallaghers, Russian Tea Room, Mandarin Oriental Hotel (what a view!), a new place called Braeburn, the Farmhouse, and more that I can't remember. We stopped at corner bakeries for hot chocolate and desserts. We stayed out late every night. We walked in for a Chinese massage...ouch. It was so much fun and inspiring and everyone was so friendly, (with the exception of only 2 people: a cabbie and a store clerk).

We did go to Century 21 and it is a trip. We spent too long there and now that we have been we both said we won't go again, but I'm glad we did it for the experience, and we did have some "finds". It is huge, crowded and goes on and on into hallways and odd levels. I'd rather be out on the street in small owner run shops. By the way, it is right up against Ground Zero, which is surrounded by a tall barrier.

My friend and I can't wait to go back. I'd love to do some work there somehow.

Again, thanks for all your great suggestions. I am keeping them for the next visit.

Nancy
