Just takes some time.,
How new is your shop??
Do you have a web site up or working on one?

Rhonda at work,
Thanks for the encouragement but I have no idea what I'm doing. I just open my shop in July 07. No web site yet.

Well, you can learn a great deal here. You don't have to post alot, read around the threads in the index...see what we talk about that's good (in our opinion) and what's not (also in our opinions)..
Find out about building websites...found in the Tech areas, I believe. Design, discussions of many subjects. Shop Talk......employees, delivery, and much more. And the infamous thread.....Wire Services !!
Take your time, post a question or two, we'll try to be gentle lol
And Rhonda is just fine !!

Welcome Gracie! You'll love it, and there's lots of info for you to check out. Pretty soon you'll be addicted to reading the posts! It's a great community of your peers.

Hello ivygreen,
Thanks, I aready love it, Now if I can just figure it out?!

try it again

Hey, I'm Gracey
I saw a movie once about this guy who delivers flowers to this lady who he thought was unhappy & sad. She thought he was just the flower delivery guy. Before she found out he was successful & the owner, she asked him why? He said because no one hates the flower delivery guy. He wanted to do that for the rest of his life.:flower: Me too
I just opened in july of 07. I have no web site yet, I really do not want to be a Telaflorist or Ftd. but maybe I'm wrong. There is so much I need to know.....Thats where this site comes in for me & why I want to be a part of it. My new thought of the day to put on my shop sign board is gonna be "To take one common thing & do it uncommonly well" I think it was said by John Heinz maybe someone knows for sure?
Also may be someone can tell me how this sounds. My sign I put outside is going to say "Flower Balloon Bouquets...Let'em know you didn't forget!" any ideas? anyway thanks for letting me chatter

Gracie...welcome....

First thing you need to work on is a website. Get yourself up and out on the web so long distance as well as local customers can find you.

Regarding the wire services, if you have made it this far without them, I think you really need to think hard on this one. I would suggest waiting until you have gone a full year cycle or two before considering the added EXPENSE of a wire service. They are NOT your friend!

Your sign ideas are great, but you might consider the Name Game if you are looking to draw folks into your shop, and have some walk/drive by traffic...works well for everyone that trys it.

Again...welcome to our community, and remember...there are no dumb questions.

Enjoy~!

welcome to flower chat!!its a world of great resource and nice people too. You said you just opened up, what kind of training do you have? are self taught? how did you break into the field of flowers? ;)~GFL

Gracie (a great name by the way), welcome to the best place on the net to learn and laugh.

If you are brave enough and smart enough to open a business in '07, then I have no doubt you will breeze around here in no time. :) We were all new once too.

There are countless threads and likely as many opinions on the pros and cons of wire services... but at the end of the day, the decisions are yours to make. Like the others, I recommend totally getting your website up and spending that money on promoting you and your shop.

Again, welcome.

Gracey, Lost my post to you. You had the guts to open a flower shop-you can easily post on this site. There are a couple of free websites out there: freewebs.com and officelive.com. They are fairly easy to work with. I'm 46 and learning-if I can do it so can you. As for the wire services-I've been keeping track of my ins and outs and every year they go down. Seems more and more people are going on line and the smart ones scroll down to find a real shop. One other thing. When the organizations come around for donations, I give them "six months of flowers". Six coupons, one per month. Can only be used for fresh flowers. Brings people to your store to meet you and see quality of your product. Gets them used to getting flowers. You look generous. Best of Luck

Yep, I really like it

Boss,
I really like the name game it is  gonna try it right after "let'em know you didn't forget'em"

Thanks again :)
Gracey

P.S. I was going to misspell didn't, people would come into my shop just to let me know (Bless my little heart!)

Not enough insainty in my life

greatflowerlady,
I'll give ya the short version
As they say here in the south "y'all ain't gonna believe this":flowerfac
In May of '07 the one & only flower shop that was in our town was going out of business. My husband looked at me & said, "you could open a flower shop":flowers: I have training in art :paintplus (my favorite medium is Crayola) no degree. I have training in Graphic arts (old school, before computers) no degree. I have worked as a bushelp, Hostess, waitress, a store clerk, when we moved to the south I worked in a sewing factory, from then until July of '07 I was a Domestic Engineer (stay at home mom) My oldest daughter started college in Aug. '07 my youngest still has 1yr. & 1/2 I looked at my husband & said yes I could. I just never thought about it but, I did see that movie. I really did want to be a flower delivery person. I love plants to death (litterally) everything just fell into place & in July '07 I opened my shop. :SUI: Nothing I can say but we opened on a wing & a prayer. I am Blessed. & oh yea I guess there just wasn't enough insainty in my life:hammer:
Are you self taught? How do you squeeze everything in? Do you do anything for proms?
Gracey

Wow I would say your a Jack of all trades!!! congrats on taking on a hard task.. I have a 4 year degree in business, and spent 5 years in a retail flower shop then went into management for a high end bridal shore while still doing weddings.(it's in my blood) I cant seem to get that wedding and event stuff out of my blood!!! (I love happy days) anyways after my 4th was born My husband built me a wonderful "studio" that sits on our land and the rest is history. I get to be home with all the kids and still have a great job too. someday when I can fit it in I will move into a store front! I attend a lot of classes and help out fellow designers during hoildays (keeps my skills updated) and it helps us all out. I am getting ready to attend this weekend the Michigan Floral association's yearly event they have a great program lined up and a lot of well known designers are coming so I am looking forward to that. Thanks for asking.TRacy:beer

Hey Gracey ! I'm new to this site to but I just keep pluggn away. I agree with Boss on the wire services.Concentrate on your web site and networking with other local businesses. The more you get your name out there the better.Bring flowers to differnent businesses that relate to flowers.Get involoved in local fundraisers. You don't have to send alot to get alot in return.Remember it's about long term relationships with your customers. You'll be great!! It all takes time-which if you didn't know- TIME is the dirtiest word in the English language. Have a great day !!
