How do we get Google to look at the FC directory and use it as a credible vertical directory for local florists to help our rankings?

G already does. :) I've seen the listing for our shop in our G Maps citations. The link also shows up under the Yahoo link command.

Would be nice if the directory had a higher page rank, but it needs inbound links from credible sources - like flower shops.

As always, some florists will link to directories and others will not - out of fear they'll lose customers if they point them to a place that lists other shops.

Yahoo is pay only. We signed up when a listing was a one-time charge for life. Now it's $299/year. Not horrible, but not a magic bullet to the top either.

Go for the free listings where you can claim them and make sure the info is correct. You also need to pick one URL and use it in all the listings consistently.

Start a journal and write down which sites/listings you've tackled. Do check back to make sure your requested changes have been made.

Cathy, is this what you are talking about? http://www.google.com/Top/Shopping/Flowers/Florists/North_America/United_States/

Also, how do you get listed on http://acxiom.com ?

I don't know who the DMOZ editor is for florists for my area, but it has been the bane of my existence for almost a year that they won't put us in the florists category. "We already have an editor, and your site is listed in the correct category"

We are listed under "flowers and gifts". GRRRRRRRR!!!!

With only 465 florists listed for North America that dmoz/google directory is pretty useless.

I wouldn't worry about it Duane.

They have a paper process (yuck) or you can kill a couple dozen birds with one stone and have accurate, consistent data flow through the pipeline via Universal Business Listings. This hits all the major upstream data providers so the correct data flows into the other directories as well.

Uh...

Well, I wouldn't say they are dead. The 5 florists who have been on there since I started watching it are getting major back-links because everyone who starts a new florist directory, (probably 1 per week) uses the free DMOZ database to begin, then they start charging everyone else for listings in the directories.

Also, Google Directory is still DMOZ, so... bloomzie, time to do one of these! :hammer: :)

I said thanks, but I think this post deserves a little discussion.

Those who browse here, and dabble a little in SEO should get on this ASAP. This will (should) greatly help your local business listings with multiple citations and with very little effort, and for only 30 bucks a year.

Thanks for that one Ryan!

I'll do my best to explain the differences in the two categories you're talking about:

http://www.dmoz.org/Shopping/Flowers/Florists/North_America/Canada/Manitoba/ is a sub-category of http://www.dmoz.org/Shopping/Flowers/Florists/ with listing requirements than include:
Submissions must be directed to the most appropriate regionally-organized sub-category and must substantially feature unique products and not just widely available arrangement images.

The location of the establishment should be easily found on the web site. Failing to have proper location identifying information on the site may greatly increase the time to be listed in the appropriate category.

Please read the Shopping FAQ for additional requirements in this branch.

No submissions will be accepted to the Top:Shopping:Flowers:Florists main index.
The emphasis actually appears in the category description.

In other words, to be listed in a sub-category of Shopping/Flowers/Florists, your primary product offerings (your flowers) should be unique. Read the Shopping FAQ (linked above) for further detail. Currently, your floral products are not unique - since they're from the stock catalog of your web hosting company and are widely found on the web.

There may be cases where you see listings of sites just showing off-the-shelf arrangement images, and most likely, the site's content has changed since it was originally submitted and listed.

If you see instances of that, click the "Report Abuse/Spam" link in the upper right area on the category page and report that the site only shows pictures that belong to ________ . Be sure to be precise. An editor will eventually have a look at your report.

Your site is listed in http://www.dmoz.org/Regional/North_...iness_and_Economy/Shopping/Flowers_and_Gifts/ because it meets the requirements by being a local business and having unique content about the business.

It may further help you understand the differences between the Shopping and Regional branches of DMOZ by reading this long-ago thread from a gal who was applying to be an editor. (Please note, the Wire Service category discussed there was dismantled by senior editors - meta editors - after they received some education about the flower industry.)

I know this isn't the answer you wanted, but I do hope you'll understand the differences in the listing guidelines between the two branches.

Well... That puts it in perspective! We do have our own wedding images! (So far) If that is the case, then it is a much better handled directory than I had originally thought it was.

I wish I had asked the question long ago!

...and THANKS! (and sorry for splitting the thread)
