I have a bride who is interested in orchids instead of carnations for her garlands to wear. Has anyone designed orchid garlands before? I'm assuming I should use cymbidiums but won't that get heavy? How many will I use? Any tips you can provide are appreciated.

And on the carnation option, it's been a while since I made one and I forget how many carnations to use. I was thinking it was 3 doz. Is that right??

Thanks!!

Heather there are quite a few threads on leis that you may find useful if you do a search. I have done carnation leis with blooms and on very thick florist wire but never had with cyms but i do think this would work as they are very good out of water.

I would put a link but i am rubbish at that sort of thing.

Buy them already made...

Amys orchids has them, or call a farm in Hawaii, cheaper, easier, done.

you are making Jamelu, and they should be done with white dendro's and some accent of the red in them, but ask first, and they need to be big, and they are easy to make,,,if you need instrustions,PM and I will send to you..

One of my customers makes her own leis and has given me 2 needles for lei making. they are long and thin. Probably could find them on the net, as I am sure.

I am with Shannon, buying them already made. Save some time.

Hello Heather: Depending on the colour scheme, you may use cymbidium orchids intermitently between about 3 inches of dendrobium orchids. That would look really spectacular and also will show off the cymbidium orchids at its best.

for an all around carnation garland I use 4 carnations which takes about 2 to 2 and a half inches so you can calculate how many you will need depending on how long the garland will be. I hope this helps.

Just order pre made dendro or vanda leis direct from Hawaii. Much cheaper and no labor. You can tie them together to make them longer if you need to. The dendro leis came keep in the cooler for over a week as long as you keep them misted with water in a closed box. Have done this many times, and never had a problem.

Heather,

If you have the time (like the wedding isn't in a week!), you should check out Hawaiin Lei Company. They have flower leis as inexpensive as $15. They are fed-exed to you, already made. The dendrobium ones should ship great.

Last year, there was a fundraiser called, "Luau for Learning" that my business partner and I attended. While everyone there had the plastic leis, we had ours shipped in fresh from Hawaiin Lei. Mine was made out of tuberose and spray roses. It smelled so wonderful! Everyone was talking about us at that event.

They do really good work and in reality, unless you can find a really good deal on the flowers, I don't think you would be able to make them what they would cost you from HLC.

Hope this helps!!!!
