We're always learning. Have you ever wondered how you measure up as a leader?

From Chris Widener...

"Be Interesting." People like to be around interesting people. They like to learn from them. The last thing you want to be if you want to lead is to be boring. People's eyes rolling back in their heads is a sign that you need to kick it up a notch. Read good books, stay on top of the news, and learn new things. That will help you be interesting and develop your conversational skills. But there is something even more important – the next "Be."

"Be Interested." More than wanting to talk about yourself, talk about the other person. Be interested in who they are, what they do, and what they like. That will endear them to you and attract them to you. People want to know that you care about them and their needs. The next time you are around someone you lead, spend the time focusing on them and see the magic that happens with your personal leadership!

That's a keeper and certainly encourages me to learn more. Thanks Ryan.

That is very interesting Victoria! It is very easy to get caught up in yourself, work and the shop that sometimes the last people you think about are you staff.
I try to consider my staff all the time for they are very important to me. They make the shop run and help me towards the goals we all want to achieve....hence the reason why listening to them is apart of a friendship and respect that you need to develope.
I know that I am far from perfect...but I do hope that I lead them down the right road and in return they help me do the leading by bringing in ideas and thoughts to the shop and our enviroment.

Victoria, Great Post. I agree. Employees as well as any one you meet. If you are having a hard time in a social setting. Best thing you can do is ask a person about themselves. Besides you can always learn something by listening. Debbie

I think that as well as being interested- eye contact is a must! It let's people know you are really listening to THEM. People need to be important and heard.

Yes Lorrie.....here's another sign of disrespect....
When YOU are "trying" to state your case, or clarify your "position" on ANY topic, you get "cut off" before you can complete your statement!!
I WAS like that....I'd be rude by not listening to what YOU had to say, and it was difficult to "break" this stupid habit!!
It was very disrespectful of me to do this with my colleagues, and it took me some time to correct myself!!
Eye contact is VERY important...people "connect" in this fashion!!

I also had this very annoying habit...I developed when I was very young wanting to imprees teachers with my knowledge and my impatience and competitiveness. I had not even realized I was doing this until a boss of mine got frustrated and said something to me about it...From that point on I got a hold of myself and forced a change...I also learned that some people's annoying behaviors will never change if they are unaware of them, It is very important to be able to confront and talk about things in a constructive manner with people close to you, it ususally makes both people better in the end...

Respect is at the core of all of this. Respect for yourself and others...
