At home, not here at the shop, we're considering eliminating our land line and just keep our cell phones. It would save us about $100 per month, and besides, isn't this what all of the young people are doing???

Lately I've been having second thoughts about the wisdom of that because of Hubby's health. I fret that 911 would not be able to locate our house if, say, Hubby called them but could not, for whatever reason, tell the address.

What are your thoughts and advice?

I could be totally wrong, but it is my understanding that with the GPS on cell phones, your husband would be completely safe with 911 able to find him. But you might want to research that a little more thoroughly.

The bigger concern to me, if your husband has poor health (sorry, I don't know the circumstances), is... will the cell phone always be charged? Will someone always remember to charge it so he has 100% access to you?

Can you compromise and get a very simple, very cheap plan for the home phone, maybe one that only has local calling, and use your cell phones for any long distance calls? Thats what my parents are doing now.

Also, depending on what service you have, maybe you can bundle the land line in with the wireless. Some friends of mine have Verizon as their home and business land line provider as well as their wireless provider. Not sure if that is available in your area though.

Connie, I too have been thinking on doing the same... but here, AT&T is only $30.00 per month including unlimited long distance and caller ID, call waiting and all the other things I don't need...

We just got a bundle from Time warner cable that combines phone, internet and digital cable for $100/month. Unlimited U.S. calling included. We are very happy with it.

My two sons have no land lines, only cells. It's not always easy to get in touch at night. Maybe I'm just old school, but I need the reliability of a land line (or at least an internet line)

The only reason I dont go to all cells is because I have little ones still at home. would hate to leave them without a way to call( they don't have cells)..

Connie:

I don't know if your husband is using or has need for any medical equipment, but some of it only works with a land line.

We had to get a "panic call" button for our uncle last year. It must be connected to a land line to work. Will not work with a cell.

Our one friend has a pace maker, and another has a defibulator. Both require a land line so that periodic monitoring can take place -- or adjustments can be relayed to the device if necessary. (isn't technology great??)

We cut our landline plant at home to local calling only. We use our cells for long distance calls, which has a very high/unlimited plan. My home plan costs us less than $30.00/month -- and we have Verizon.

We looked into bundling our internet/cable/phone with Comcast. the jury is still out on that one. they have not yet made me a deal that I could not refuse.

I got rid of my landline at home about 1 months ago.. I still miss it. I wish I still had it. I am saving a bunch of money, but I don't know if it is worth it or not. I wonder how long you have to get your old # back. I had it for 30 years, I feel like a part of me is missing. Isn't that just crazy thinking?

And I agree about kids. It hit me this morning that when my grandkids are over they won't be able to call if something should happen. They will have to find my cell phone, which half the time I can't remember where I layed it.

you need to watch your bill,i got the same thing after the year was up the bill went up i did not no that for some time the phone was $25.00 a month it now $50.00 i am going to cancel

I don't know what it's like in the US but in my experience the sound is not clear on all mobile (cell) phone calls. In fact I would guess about a third of the calls I get from mobiles aren't loud enough or there is static or noise from the wind or other background noise.

I think phone companies need to make mobile phones better phones before they add all this other gabage like cameras, MP3 players and internets.

Thanks to everyone for your replies. We've disconnected the land lines.

We learned that 911 can still be dialed from a disconnected phone. That's one more example of my not understanding everything that I know.

Vikki, I hesitate to say how many years I've had our land line #, but I was just out of college. I may have withdrawal also, but I had reached the point that I never answered the phone at home because noone, except telemarketers, called me there.

BTW, an AT&T once told me that they "hold" a number for 30 days.

We'll see how it goes.

Thank you, Folks! :blowkiss::blowkiss::blowkiss::yourock::yourock:
