does anyone have pictures ready yet from the show?
did anyone take the test?
did anyone meet/talk to Preston Bailey?
do tell!

fyi-the next show is in Chicago and then the following year in Kansas City!!! i will try for accredidation then. yay!!

Just got home - it was amazing. I shot loads of pictures and will post when I get them uploaded from my chips.

You can also view some photos on the AIFD site.

Preston Bailey was entertaining and his presentation was somewhat controversial. He threw the f-bomb at least 8 times and focused on his mistakes over the years. He made no arrangements and used a selections of slides from his books. (There were two spectacular fresh 'pineapple designs' made by Brad Harnish.) Seems folks either loved him or hated him.

Will write more about the progams when I get a chance.

I was one that was so-so about Preston as well. Most of the photos were ones that I had seen before, and I have never even seen his books. Lots of the ones he used have also been in magazines. I must say, though, that he hit it on the head when he said "What can I possibly show this crowd, with the most talented designers in the world!" I suppose that it was natural to focus on his "mistakes" (not his word - that's where the f-bomb came in) and show himself to be humble and let us learn from them. The designs that we saw on stage (in the other programs) were awe-inspiring.

I do have about 400 photos on my computer-- now I just have to figure out which ones to post!

The one photo that I regret not having is the one where Phil and Cathy are graciously accepting their well-deserved award! Way to go!! (I wish I was better with the action shots......)

After our flower-chat get together, I am also going to try to figure out how to change to my real name for my login name!

Some very interesting pics on the AIFD site so far, would love to see more if and when everyone gets a chance to upload them. How was Rene's presentation, no one has mentioned him?

I can change that for you...

Send me a PM with what you want it to be and I'll take care of it, and let you know when it's done. Your password will remain unchanged, unless you wish to change that as well.

AIFD symposium

I thought overall the design shows were outstanding. Photos never do the designs justice....you just have to go sometimes to get the full effect.

About Preston Bailey and Sylvia Wynstock........I was asked to play the piano for the very exclusive private reception in the Presidential Suite for Preston. Sylvia was there also. When on stage he did the shock technique with his F bomb....but, in private, he seemed very humble and sweet. He seemed to give everyone a long personal time with him as he signed his books and let them take photos.

Sylvia pulled off the impossible......the Power Point presentation did not arrive and she was able to entertain us for more than 30 minutes without a game plan. She also was very nice at the private reception. Her cakes are to die for....if you can afford them.

We got to watch several of the flower Chat member be inducted on Monday night. Beth O'Reilly was one of them and she has to hurry home to do a big show for the Texas State Florist Association early Saturday morning. So, I am making a huge effort to turn around and go to Austin to see her after only being home less than one day.

Several of the Flower chatters met on Sunday night for dinner and had a great time. It was so nice to be able to put faces with all these names. We owe Kathy a big "thank you" for organizing this dinner.

We should be so very proud of Phil and Kathy Rullodo. They received the highest award given by the organization at the awards ceremony. Congratulations....it is so well earned.

Rene's presentation

Tuberose,
Rene' and Matt Woods show was probably my favorite. It had all the elements. It was really funny, incredible designs, top-notch commentating and almost perfection in all ways. In fact, I would recommend that you go to the AIFD site and order the tape of their show.

Thanks so much for your reply Carol, I'll look into that. It sounds like it would be well worth buying a video. I did get to see Rene at a conference some time back, but have not seen Matt Wood yet.

I love hearing all about symposium. I regretted having missed it. I will be there for Chicago though.

There is always at least one break-thru program that is so moving. Who did that one and which one do you think that program was.

Geert Pattons program rocked. His stuff was awesome.

The Korean lady, Young Ju Kim, was incredible.

Nitaya Emig is amazingly talented and her work blew me away.

Rene never disappoints and he and Matt did a nice presentation.

Hitomi is fab. Always. And bringing on 2 other designers and showcasing them is genius. Plus they were great in their own right.

Preston Bailey was overrated. If his appearance brings attention to AIFD and our industry of talented designers, then thats great. I cant believe he just did powerpoint. If I saw another power point, I was going to bleed out my eyes. Do design WITH power point, but its one dimentional alone.

The gal from Brides magazine acted like she was talking to brides/consumers...even made a comment about to the effect of cutting back on flowers if you are on a budget....HELLO! You are talking to FLORISTS!
Hopefully she will feature AIFD designers in her magazine instead of some of the hacks I have seen.
And it was all power point. Yawn. I could have seen what she presented at home, on line, in a magazine wearing my jammies.

And it was cool to see Cathy and Phil be honored. They don't know me, but of course everyone knows them.

And I took the AES. Got lots of positive feedback. I am holding my breath until I get the letter; should be in mid August.

By the way, the cake lady was a jewel and she showed real class. I adored her.

I know, I have trouble expressing my opinion. I shouldn't hold my feelings in.......its bad for your health! HA!;)

First of all......Good Luck on your AES results. I know the anticipation of waiting on those results. The second guessing of yourself almost daily....

in fact - I was attending another floral show when my results came into the shop I was working at. When I got back to the shop, I saw the letter.
I asked the other people, " When did this come.....They told me in the mail on Saturday, and this was the followng monday.

They asked me....are you going to open it? I told then that I would do my day's orders first, because if it was a resounding No.....They would get crap out of me the rest of the day.

After I finished the work.....I cautiously opened the letter, read through it carefully.....then re-read it to make sure what it said......
Then.....at the top of my lungs, I shouted " Hot @@@@, I passed, I made it"

The next thing I know, here comes my shop owner out of her office, said, "I don't believe it......." Grabbed the letter and read for herself.

Both You Cathy and Phil deserved that great honor. The contributions the both of you have made to our insustry cannot be measured.

Additionally, I can think of more deserving persons than the both of you to be nominated for Service to AIFD and to become a Fellow of the Institute. When they call for nominations again.....I am going to nominate the both of you.

My favorite Pic from

AIFD Symposium. . .Bama meets CHR . . . it's okay, my Kathie (one of the new inductees) took the pic. Not only is Cathy brilliant, she was fun to be around.
We actually got back to B'ham around noon today. Spent Thursday traveling to visit sis-in-law & fam near Sacramento. Planned to get back Sun night, but as plans go. . .got to spend the night in Dallas, . .oh well, at least it was at the Westin and it was on AA.
Took many more pics, but I must be the worlds worst photographer, bad. ..

One question.......How outrageous, crazy, and cool were the body flowers for President's ball? How accurate was the phrase uttered by Holly Money-Collins at the St. louis symposium " Corsage war has begun !"

I hope you all got plenty of "corsage war" pictures. :)

AIFD Symposium

I had an amazing time at Symposium, spending most of my days in the design room. The payoff was to be able to work on stage and backstage for the program. I worked with Life 3. Their floral art is so unlike anything I have been exposed to. They also did the workshop on Friday. I came away feeling invigorated and proud to be a designer. I made lots of new friends who also volunteered and the Life 3 guys were very appreciative, kind and caring.
The boutonnier and cosage work was more understated than previous years.
I too, would love to see some pictures. I will definately be buying some of the DVD's

Hey Sue -

Welcome to FlowerChat. :) I just uploaded some shots from the programs to my blog - http://floristblogs.com/photos/avante_gardens/tags/AIFD+Events/default.aspx (Am still playing catch-up and have more but they need cropped and cleaned.)

I absolutely loved the three cuties from Life3 and especially enjoyed the class or Thursday. :)

Glenn - Thanks for the fun photo! It was a delight to meet the Bama's and get to spend a bit of time with y'all. (Symposium goes way too fast.)

Rick, Kebbie and jduncan - Thank you so much for the very kind words. We were truly honored to be selected for the award.

The corsages and boutonnieres for final night were great - as always. Looking at all the amazing work, I was wondering if AIFD should consider producing a book featuring the intricate work shown that night. I'd buy one.

Cathy......That is not a bad idea. Who do you think would be the best person to propose this idea to? I would think either Marie Ackerman or Rocky Pollitz because of the publishing work they have done with PFD and Flowers&. Talmadge McLaurin or Charlotte Pittman with Florist's Review might also be good sources of info as well as Tom or anyone at HQ.

I'd love to be involved in such a project. If we can get this rolling....count me in.
